Fraternity, UNC-Chapel Hill Unable To Reach Settlement

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Attorneys were unable to reach a settlement Monday in a lawsuit by a religious fraternity against the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, meaning the case could go to trial.
In documents submitted Monday to U.S. District Court in Greensboro, the two sides said they were at an impasse.
Alpha Iota Omega sued last year, claiming the university had infringed on members' rights to free speech, free association and free exercise of religion when it revoked the fraternity's status as an official campus group.
The school's action was prompted by the three-member fraternity's refusal to sign the university's nondiscrimination policy. The policy specifies that groups cannot deny membership to students based on personal characteristics such as age, race, color, national origin, religion, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation and gender, except legal exemptions for social fraternities and sororities.
The fraternity has said it shouldn't be forced to admit nonbelievers or gay students.

unrelated sidenote: Chapel Hill had a gay bashing over the weekend too.
