Speaker at Western KY U to address black fraternity hazing
Author Dr. Rickey Jones will be giving a lecture and discussing his book, "Black Haze: Violence, Sacrifice and Manhood in Black Greek-letter Fraternities," at 7 tonight in Downing University Center, Room 340.
"Black Haze" is the first book that is devoted to tackling the subject of hazing in the five major black fraternities.
Jones is a fraternity member, past president and former national committee representative. In this book he discusses the hazing rituals of these fraternities.
According to the book's back cover, "Jones maintains that hazing rituals within these fraternities are more deeply ingrained, physically violent, and imbued with meaning to their participants than the initiation rites of other ethnic groups."
Jones continues to write that "hazing in black fraternities is a modern manifestation of sacrificial ritual violence that has existed since ancient times, and the participants view such rituals as an important tool in the construction of individual and collective black male identity."
