Upward Bound...In Jeopardy?

Thursday, January 20, 2005

Dear Colleague:

High level officials in the White House today have confirmed that the
President's budget, to be released on February 7, will propose to
terminate the Talent Search and Upward Bound programs at the end of
the 2005-2006 school year. These cuts totaling $460 million will
then be used to fund the President's new high school initiative - an
extension of No Child Left Behind.

Our response to this outrage must be certain and deliberate to assure
that both Republicans and Democrats reject this proposal in both the
House and the Senate. However, to prepare for what will surely be a
long fight, I would ask that you immediately do the following. Call,
write, and fax your Representative in Washington D.C.

Please share with Upward Bound Alumni and anyone else who thinks the
program should not be eliminated.

I believe this is true my friends as a former student and employee of the program it saddens me to see this day come. That program did sooooo much for me as a high school student. Bush makes me friggin sick! On top of that, he is cutting pell grants completely. I feel for the low income incoming undergrads, a bastard he is!!!

I would not be surprised if he just stops short of bankrupting the country. He is giving the people what they want. They voted for Bush, they should not be surprised by anything the man does. IMO, Bush doesn't have anything to loose therefore this is just the beginning.

This pisses me off to no end!!!
I am not an alumni of the program but I was a counselor as well as a teacher for Upward Bound. THOSE KIDS and their families NEED UB!!!!

No Upward Bound means less kids graduating from high school means more kids either going to the military or committing crimes and going to jail!!!!!!! Either way, the Black community is getting killed off.

I read this on the phone with my mom and was telling her about it as well as Pell Grant cuts. We are both just in awe. I WILL be writing letters and forwarding this on to all of my friends and family.

I was never a participant, but I have always admired the program. This is truly a shame!

I'm a UB "graduate". I really enjoyed the program, I really don't think I would have gotten so many scholarships had I not participated. I was always a good student, but I went to a HS whose guidance dept left a LOT to be desired and my counselors really help me get my paperwork together. We were always taking trips too!

And this is what so many kids need. A lot of counselors at many schools are overwhelmed with truancy, testing and other bureaucratic crap that getting kids on the right track to handle college as well as apply for college get lost in the shuffle. Upward Bound is essential, not an accessory.

I concur with you 1SD... I participated in Upward Bound and the program was certainly useful in assisting students going to college, particularly in rural/small school systems b/c the guidance counselors left a lot to be desired for many gifted black students. Its a shame that this program is gonna be cut....thanks again "Dubya"
