The Challenge?

Is anyone else trying to lose weight? Just wondered. I know in the past 4 years Ive gained about 40-45 pounds because of laziness. Ive never once in my life been on a diet and I am now trying to diet and exercise to look better for me and make me feel good. This week Ive done pretty well. I used to drink about 4-5 glasses of pop a day and I havent had any in over a week. Ive been drinking water everyday, taking multi-vitamins, drinking V8, and eating 6 small meals a day. I am doing the body for life challenge. I get my book this week on it. Until then, Ive been working out for a hour a day and eating right, no junk food. I stepped on a scale today very nervous and Ive lost 6 pounds this week. I cant believe it but its true. I weighed myself the day I started and in one week Ive lost 6 pounds. I really hope this diet works because Id love to look and feel better. Anyone else dieting or trying anything to look better? If so let us know. Id love to share stories and workout stuff.

Oh yay! I'm not alone in the beginning of the year "gonna lose weight" battle. Here's a little background: in high school I was somewhat over weight.... last year, my freshman year of college, I lost 40 lbs in 9 months!! (maybe it was because the dining hall food was so bad. lol) I fell in love with the salad bar and because I had breaks inbetween all my classes, I ended up walking an average of 4.5 miles a day. It was great because I didn't go into it with the goal of losing weight, so it came as a shock.

I stayed at that weight all last semester (give or take a few pounds) and was happy with myself. BUT, over the Christmas break I went back home to NY and gained 17 lbs in a month (yikes!!). My family became addicted with the TV show "The Biggest Loser" and decided to make our own version. Entry fee was $100, there are 22 people involved, and you have until the Saturday before Mother's for final weigh in. The winner is determined by the highest percentage of weight lost not the number of pounds (because then I would be at a HUGE disadvantage!).

The money would be great, but seeing so much "less" of my family will be even better. We have a history of heart disease and it's a great way to motivate those who don't usually like the idea of a diet (my family will do anything for money.... such gamblers. lol)

So three weeks into the competition I lost 19 lbs to put me where I was last semester, actually a little better. The weight came off super fast because I had put it on super fast. The past week, I've been at a stand-still.... it's frustrating and sooo tempting to go for that cookie in the dining hall, but I must resist.

That's my advice to everyone..... the first few pounds come off super fast and then you're going to be steady for a while.... DON'T GIVE UP!! Just keep with it and everything will be fabulous. (plus, bathing suit season is approaching, think how hot you'll look in that bikini).

Amazing snack foods...

My chapter just had our first membership education session and it was called "The Yummy Hunter's Guide". It's a book written by a man and a woman from NY who go around to supermarkets looking for healthy snack alternatives. It's not a great book if you're looking for ways to make low calorie meals, but if you want to use it when browsing through the grocery it's great!

I'm a very picky eater and once I find something I like, I usually stick to it. They had some interesting things though that were delicious!

------Baked snap peas (it was like a potato chip/french fry combo.... delicious and 22 pieces were 150 calories!)
------Rold Gold's Honey wheat pretzels (I'm addicted!!) They taste amazing and are 110 calories/10 from fat in 8 pretzels. But after 8 I'm sooo full I don't want anymore.
------Sugar free Cream-savers. They're smaller than the regular ones, but are good if you just want a little something sweet.
------Whole Wheat English muffins (smaller than a sandwich w/bread and so much better for you)
------My fav cereal in the world: Special K red Berries (although at YH we had "puffins" which were amazing)
------Diet Lemon Snapple (I love it! I love it! I love it!)
------Looking for a chocolate fix? sugar free JELLO pudding cups. I like the pre-made cups more (well, I don't have a stove here) and the portion control is great.

anyone else have any yummy treats that they swear by?

Sorry to crash your board...but I'm singing the same song. Have to get off some of that weight!

Hubby and I are going to do Weight Watchers together. I used to be with them, but fell off the wagon, and now I need to get back on!

I will tell you some great snacky snacks..

low fat graham crackers 1 "plank" divided into two. Put 1 tablespoon of lowfat coolwhip on it, and freeze. Makes a great "ice cream" sandwich.

check out
dottiesweightlosszone.com I think that's the web site. lots of good stuff there too

Good luck on your progress!
