Who's in the modeling business?
Tonite I took little btb87 to our local mall where folks were auditioning for modeling contracts. There were 3 areas: Fashion show preliminary, photo shoot preliminary and screen test preliminary. Some of the comments that they mentioned (on her evaluation sheet) were that she was very photogenic, beautiful eyes, great personality, adorable, and too cute. Her weaknesses were that she needed more practice and development, better material to showcase her talent, she needed to smile more.
But the good news is that she is a finalist! She has another audition Sunday afternoon at 5. Of course, we have to step up the game. They gave us some tips, but I also want to know if there's anyone that is a model or works "behind the scenes" in that area that can possibly give additional information.
Thanks!

LOL.
While you're tripping. The little black girl, whose mother is a Spelman Alum is in "Women Thou Art Loosed" as Kimberly Elise's character (as a child).
Go on Soror btb. Ya'll do the dang thing!

Try the local rec centers. SOmetimes they have modeling classes, I took one the summer before my 9th grade year, and although I am way too short to do any modeling, I did learn alot about how to present myself to an audience. Most of all HAVE FUN, both of you.

I and many of my friends have been in the "business"... Being so close to LA, it wasn't that hard...
Who do you know on the selection committee and do you know what they are looking for? If it is raw talent, then they would have not stated too much about practice and development.
What is Little BTB87's talent? Usually singing is the "stereotypical one" for little African American girls. So if she can sing, then let her sing to her hearts content.
To actually get practice and talent, you have to go to a "finishing school", such a Barbizon. So she can practice walking and presenting herself with "stage presence"... Depending on her genes--i.e. if she is going to be tall like her folks, then she will be able to have "run way" talent. Runways are extremely slippery and they ask the models to wear 3 inch heels or taller...
Moreover, they ask them to take care of themselves physically. Constant exercise regimen with hardly any adverse foods: basically eating just lettuce. That's how the supermodels get eating disorders...
For some reason, ballet gives the poise that's needed for runway work... If she's not into that already, she needs to be. And she needs to get into "toe" fast.
If she wants to sing, she needs formal voice lessons. She must modulate her voice at a given time. That's where the practicing comes into play. Moreover, a piano instruction helps with learning music theory.
Film, takes drama. That means acting classes.
If you want your daughter to pursue this avenue, she must become a "triple threat". It cannot be popular for just this summer, it is continuous work. When I found out Beyonce and Destiny's Child would go to their own summer camp and run 5 miles, singing songs they liked to strengthen their voices, then that is what is will take to be a "star".
And it is good for the parents to be involved until the kids become of age to make their own decisions. But until that time, parents are going to have to make them work very hard to be that "superstar" one day... And she might have to go to some "seedy" places... Can YOU deal with that?
I can tell you more if you want me too...
As they say in the business: Break a Leg...

Soror AKA_Monet,
Wow.
Thank you so much for all of this information!
We did at least come up with a theme for her runway fashion show. I'm trying to do something that will keep me from having to go out and purchase additional clothes for this, so we came up with a winter theme. She'll wear a coat, hat and mittens and we'll have "snow" that she can blow from her hand. We're also going over to a friend's home tonite that has done some modeling years ago so she can help with the walk.
Thanks again, Soror!

Soror btb87,
I love the idea and that is the route you should definitely go... However, I believe your "scouts" are looking for those girls who will be "ready" for Spring or Summer wear... The collections are already out... I think there is some cable channel that shows off all the major Paris/NewYork/Rome fashion houses... Little btb97 needs to watch that and see if she wants all of that...
So if you add a little "Spring" flair with the snow... Like handing out roses (petals) maybe, then the "scouts" might realize that is what they need...
Because really, think of these folks as marketing agents for their company they represent... Since they have "clients" that want specifics for their "market", then that is what they will choose...
Also, do not be shocked if your wonderful, blessed daughter is the "token"--that's the name of this business... They need that tinge of diversity, or whatever they call it these days...
Besides, they may be looking for the Summer fashion shoot... 'Cuz it is almost too late for the Spring--if these folks have "clout"... That means bathing suits... So they really wanna see body attached to that smile, too...
How far are YOU willing to go with this, if it takes some "craziness" that you would be unable to reconcile for your daughter? Make sure you know EVERYTHING at ALL TIMES...
P.S. This is also about "creativity" within limits... So don't go WAAAYY over the top... But "guesstimate" what folks might buy in the future (during summer) for their kids...
Like I'm thinking a iPOD or Nextel's game thingy... and make sure she's bebopping to whatever and talking about all the princess stuff that they like to market... Put that kinna stuff on credit from Best Buy and take it back when you don't want it...
