AKL suspended for 2yrs

Social Fraternity Suspended

They are appealing the decision because the 2 year suspension could very well kill the chapter at Truman, which is potentially very true. They built a new house in 2001 (I think) that is fairly large for Truman.

Kind of crappy that the fraternity self-reported what happened and then got hit with such tough sanctions. You would think that Alpha Kappa Lambda nationals and TSU admin would not be so harsh since the chapter let them know about it. I could see a year's probation or even a suspended social semester. This is too far.

ETA: The point I was trying to make when I said "This is too far" is that if I were at an AKL chapter or another fraternity on the Truman State campus, this reaction would make me think twice about self-reporting any incidents. It seems like it would make chapters and fraternities not take responsibility or become uncooperative with officials.

Actually, this sucks!

They tried to do the right thing and look what it got them?

Then some people wonder why GLOs want to hide behind closed doors.

It does suck.

But what was "self reported" is that an underaged young man consumed alcohol in the fraternity house.

No matter how you stack it, that's against the law.

Organizations just have few options these days.

It's too bad.

I may have misread, but it appeared to me that he drank elsewhere but that at least one of the locations was a member's house.

The injury was at the house, but according to the story, the drinking was not.

It seems harsh to me, but maybe there were previous incidents that I don't know about.

One the one hand, the group and school can't accept illegal behavior; on the other other hand, I think the college apartment at which underaged drinking had NOT occured would be the exception.

Everyone is lucky that this kid wasn't more gravely injured.

But in re reading the article, it said He drank at the house and then went elsewhere to drink more.

But even though, in self reporting, this seems to be a very harsh punishment for the whole the Chapter. They were trying to do the proper things and then really get kicked in the teeth!

They were one of the strongest of the NIC Organizations with 80 + members and a faily new house.

But since Truman has changed names, they have been turned into one of the best schools in the mid-west and very highly regarded. I am sure this may be the reason for the harsh penalty.

Well, yeah, on some level, I hear what you are saying, I think.

But we're at the stage where GLOs or colleges have decided that for issues related to liability, drinking in the house is frequently forbidden. Certainly, nobody is going to be happy about members providing alcohol to underaged new members.

I think hitting these guys hard on this is a mistake especially because it was self-reported. The only thing I believe it would have been realistic to hope the guys would have done differently is to take the guy to the hospital after the head injury instead of waiting until he went the next day.

As a Truman student myself, this is incredibly unfortunate. The AKL's had a very strong chapter here with an absolutely beautiful house. I remember hearing of this incident when it originally occured, however, there have been other whispers going on around campus. I also feel that the punishment is a bit harsh, especially considering other issues their chapter has had to deal with as of late.

Most of us agree that, to some extent, the drinking laws are silly. At least I do. Most of us also know that college aged students are going to drink. Most of us would have no problem with students drinking in their own living quarters -- whether that be a fraternity house, dorm, apartment -- whatever.

But, although a lot of people don't like it -- it's still against the law, no matter how bad the law is.

GLO's cannot ignore the law. They can't afford to.

That's why this stuff happens -- and will continue to happen until the laws are changed.

Even if it sucks.

Update Jan. 25, 2007

AKL's appeal was denied, according to an article in the school paper. A further appeal is planned:

As we can see, many more schools and GLOs are getting more restrictive on R M situations.

It may be a hard lesson learned. But I give them an A + for effort to try to hold things together.

After all, an 80 + member chapter and a fairly new house are nothing to sneeze at.

I can only wish them luck.
