Moore, Gibson get snubbed byMPAA

Not sure if this should be here or in the Entertainment section, but I thought this qualified as news. I am upset that The Passion did not get nominated. I think Jim Caviezel's (sp) potrayal of Christ was great and the dramatization of the entire Crucifixion was oscar-worthy, but whatever I am thinking that there was a socio-political slant to this omission.

I agree. Passion of the Christ should've been nominated for best picture.

I didn't see it. Is it a better picture than the other nominations?

Why? Granted, 95% of the film was the physical suffering that Christ went through in his last days on earth, but the film was greatly devoid of the spiritual suffering and reasoning.

Well, I guess I am speaking from my experience of watching the movie. I had NEVER gone through such emotional changes as I went through watching that movie as I have any other movie. I think any dramatization that takes a person through that much should be recognized. I have felt strong emotions from watching other movies and those that stirred my imagination and made me truly feel the message usually were ones that The Academy recognized as Oscar worthy films.

Of course, there is the possibility that my spiritual connection to the subject matter has something to do with it, but it has been said many times that other people who were of other religious backgrounds and faiths were very emotionally moved by the film as well. I just feel that it should have at least been nominated, if for no other reason than the effect it had on people, good and bad.

I suspect this is true - most people I know who have little association with Christianity found the movie to be unnecessarily gory and a little difficult to appreciate, either as entertainment or art. I think that's a solid case for exclusion by the Academy Awards.

Fahrenheit 9/11 is a documentary, so Moore is to blame for it not being in the Oscars.

Passion was a snuff film, not exactly a movie but more of an antisemetic fantasy about a guy getting tortured.

Yea, probably the supporters of these films will say that Jews control hollywood and didn't give these projects a chance to win an award. Say what you want, but blame the directors for it's failure as a nomination.

Honestly, who cares what the Oscars say anyway, I judge a film by whether I like it or not. Lots of movies I thought deserved an award never got one either. I'm sure you can say the same even besides these two.

Fahrenheit 9/11 wasn't even that good--and I'm a (sarcastic gasp) LIBERAL!

For that matter, neither was The Passion.

Just because films do well commercially doesn't mean they are respected in the film community, nor does critical success ensure an Oscar nomination.

True...the Oscars have a long history of picking undeserving movies/actors for awards. While I didn't think either Fahrenheit or Passion were Oscar-worthy, I wasn't sure whether they would be nominated or not.

If Michael Moore lets Fahrenheit be judged as a documentary, he at least gets a nomination, but he let his ego get the best of him.

Ahem... it's the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (A.M.P.A.S.(R)) and not the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) who hand out the Academy Awards (R) (aka Oscars(R)). The MPAA deals only with movie ratings.

(Just making sure that I place (R) next to any mention of the AMPAS, knowing how pricky they are with their trademark and copyright. )
