CPR Anyone?
Is anyone CPR trained/certified?
I become certified on tomorrow. It's been a few years since I was last "legit".
If so, have you ever had to use your "skills"?
I dunno about putting my mouth on someone's mouth. I think I'll have to keep a plastic baggie in my possession.

I am CPR certified, but I let my certification lapse the last 2 years. In the 10 years that I had been certified, I had to use it once, but not for mouth to mouth but to do the heimlich maneuver.

I was recently certified for a counseling position that I ended up not taking. We were told that you can use a porous material (a t shirt, a paper towel) to cover the mouth if necessary, or you can get some mouth guards from your instructor. I've never used cpr or the heimlich.

kiml, I've heard that now the heimlich is considered unsafe and is not recommended anymore. Is this true?
And I'm neither certified nor trained.

I'm certified. I live in Florida and went through general CPR and Infant CPR training as a part of my Lamaze/Motherhood workshops when I was pregnant with my daughter. It has been 3 years and I probably need a refresher course on all of the techniques.

I'm certified in both adult CPR and first aid. I have to get certified each year because I conduct a summer residential program for students. Fortunately, I've never had to use the CPR skills, but I've had to perform minor first aid. As far as Heimlich not being safe, I hadn't heard that. However, it seems like every year there is an updated technique for something.

I was certified about 7 years ago, but I think that I could use a refresher course. I have not heard anything about the Heimlick Maneuver being unsafe. In fact, last year our school nurse showed us teachers how to do it (we had recently had an incident of a student choking during lunch). I have never had to use my skills. I have often worried that if anything goes wrong I might be setting myself up for a law suit. We live in a very litigious society.

My cards say 1 year for CPR, and 3 years for First Aid.

I am certified as well, since I am the softball coach I have to get CPR every year and the firstaid every 3. No I have never had to use it, but I often wonder would I remember everything correctly if actualy put in the position. If someone were actually dying in front of me I honestly don't think( I hope not) I would be tripping about their mouth.
Soror- Why are you getting certified?

I haven't been certified in over 2 years, but it wasn't stated in my last certification class that this was unsafe to use. We were still shown how to do it, and when I did it, it was in a restaurant on a man that was choking so he had no problem with me doing it. It was weird though because you never really think that you will ever have to use it. I too was certified for CPR and first aid, and the CPR certification is for 1 year, and the first aid for 3 years.

there are laws protecting good samaritans. someone asked this question during my training. You cant be sued b/c you performed minor first aid on someone.
eta: you technically can hurt someone doing the heimlich; crack a rib, bruises, etc. but if you do it correctly, thumb against person's stomach, you shouldn't hurt them *too* much.

Because I am. Since I work with medically fragile students, wouldn't it behoove me to get certified? LOL I've been working with this population for 8 years ( a few have had seizures), luckily the training wasn't necessary. You never know what could happen.
I"m not promising what I can do, but I can call the office so they can call 911!
