Which is it?
That big dance at the end of the high school year -
Did you call it "Prom" or "the prom"?
We were discussing this on another mb and it made me remember how bad I wanted to smack Andie in Pretty in Pink when she kept saying "what about Prom." We always referred to it as THE prom.

both...
who are you going with to the prom?
or
what are you wearing to prom?
it really didn't matter either way.

Locally, one goes to THE Prom, not to Prom.

Ok, but "prom" is not a proper noun! Would you say "I'm going to airport?" or "What are you wearing to restaurant?" Although you WOULD say "I'm going to Miami International" or "What are you wearing to Bookbinders?"
I go through a similar argument with my friends in Pittsburgh who insist on asking "Can you ride me home?" rather than "Can you GIVE me a ride home?" I try to explain that what they are asking is if I would get on their back and they will take me home, but its always useless.

Not necessarily.... IF your speaking Brittish English, its very common to say something like "She's been taken to hospital." or "I go to university."
As for us, it was 'prom', which seemed normal. We went to graduation, not 'the' graduation.

OK...I'll accept that, but England IS an entirely different country...we just happen to speak the same language with many different aspects. Do they hold annual proms in England?
It seems silly to say that because the grammar in England is one way, that its correct in the United States.
(Since you cant decipher tone and inflection over the internet, please understand this reply is in the NICEST tone and simply a discussion )
