Thumbs up

Russ, get someone who knows what they are doing and abides by Codes of Local Govt. agencys for Permits which cost Money.

Now, a little hint, if you have a back stoop for walk out, you ah may be able to add on to it with out all of the Govt BS. Check any Lumber Groups a Major Hardware Stores, they may have Kits at a Reduced Price to buy.

Good Luck Russ, they are nice when they are done!!!!! Enjoy!

I don't have a stoop because I live on the 13th floor. The thing is that I really want a deck. I've been watching the DIY channel a lot, and I'm pretty sure that I can do this. I just need to punch a hole in the wall, build the deck, and add a door. I just need some help figuring out how to not make it obvious because I don't think that it will meet code.

A deck on my apt in NYC is my dream! Well not this apt, a much better one but anyways. I've always wanted to be able to sit outside and relax. Good luck Russ!

They usually only take cash and it's somewhat risky (they can leave, the work might not be the best, the cops can arrest them). If I were you I would ask around because often you will find them in immigrant neighborhoods. I know in NYC, the black market for contractors/construction is done widely by Chinese immigrants (sorta like the street mechanics in the Bronx and hunts point...).

If you had a real house where you were building a deck, I would recommend that fake wood. Using real redwood or something is a biatch. You always have to do upkeep on it like refinishing it and sanding it. The wood warps or rots, and that sucks.

Make friends with your neighbors. Our neighbors are really annoying and a$$holes, so someone made an anonymous complaint to the city about their not to code deck. And removal of a healthy tree.
