Odd things worth $$$

When I was a little girl, my aunt to used buy me some comic books about a character named Katy Keene. She was a model w/a younger sister & a best friend named Lucky (I think). I recently started thinking about this so I called her up. She still has the comic books & is sending them to me. They are in really good condition & I was excited to get them. On a whim, I looked them up & found out that they are comics from the 1950's & worth a fortune. One comic alone can be worth upwards of $130.00. The better condition they're in, the more money they're worth. I am simply stunned b/c I have quite a few of them. I'd never sell them b/c they are part of my childhood & I'll always keep them. They remind me of a time in my childhood that was one of the best times of my life.

The point of this is has any of you ever received something, bought something, or found anything that turned out to be worth some $$$?

A few years ago my boyfriend at the time purchased a broken china doll for $5 from my next-door neighbor's yard sale. He sold it on eBay for $230.

Had Playboys from the first issue. While in college, Mom threw them away.

I about chocked. Had a lot of the old Comic Books, threw those away then choked twice. Told her how much they were worth, she about choked too!

My greataunt gave me one of the original Shirley Temple dolls - from the 1930's. Even though it's loose in the joints etc, I've been offered $500 for it. When I mentioned that I have a wardrobe for it, too, the dealer almost fainted!

Tom, my dad had the original Marilyn Monroe calendar, and it went missing from his office!

Pi Kapp Tom...Pi Kapp, they still do 40oz bottles but many rare and discontinued 40oz's go for over a $100.00+ on ebay. There is a whole site dedicated to collecting 40oz's.

It's not old, but shoes! Like Manolo Blahniks and Christian Louboutins. They cost between $400-700 for regular ones. And some are even more!

Also, purses. Freaking Hermes bags are $$$$$$$. Thousands and thousands of $$$ depending on the leather.

My mom had tons of old comics in her parents' attic - there was probably a Superman #1 in there. My grandpa threw them out. They probably could have paid for my entire college education.

I have a Shirley Temple dish (my mom's obviously) from the 1930's that I do wonder how much it's worth. I also have some kitschy 70's things (like Fred Flintstone glasses) but I wouldn't ever sell those - they're special to me. My heirs can do what they want with them.

I'll bite the carrot on this one considering my user name.....

Well, we know about fraternity and sorority pins and the big surprises on how some of them go for so much on ebay. Farmhouse Fraternity, which many of us did not have on our campuses as undergrads, are worth $250 for a pin from TODAY. Very rare. I have sold a few pins which were not listed corectly the first time.

Other than that, my husband's grandmother bought him a Dapper Dan doll in 1973 - she misplaced it and it was discovered a few months ago in her attic after her passing. It was in the original box and had the four original outfits also in mint package condition. I could not give this "collectible" to my toddler so I sold it on ebay for $100 and used it buy a fraternity pin...um, I mean more toys for my son!

Okay..not really an odd thing, but worth telling.

This past weekend in Sandestin, Florida, the Thomas Kinkade ( sp?) Gallery actually had the artist there for a fundraiser for the Make A Wish Foundation. Deal was if you bought any of the canvases $500 and up, you could get him to personally autograph it at the fundraiser. In addition, there would be a $1000 24x36 ( something like that) Kinkade canvas that he would personally autograph and it would be auctioned for Make-A-Wish. My mom and dad decided to enter the auction, and had pre-determined bid already in mind.

Mom and Dad decided to take part b/c they both like Kinkade a lot, but I never found out how much until this weekend.

Bidding started at $1000--went back and forth and it built up fast. F ound out that Dad bid $5000, and thought he had it. A lady bid $5500, then watched as my dad bid $6000. She gave in, and my dad was now the owner of a Kinkade $1000 canvas with the author's signature.

Here' s the clincher!

Kinkade, on the back of the $1000 autographed canvas, sketched an original drawing of one of his lighthouses, signed it, dated, it, and wrote on it "Florida Tour 2004".

My dad's investment went up to $19000 in a matter of minutes by that single one of a kind drawing on the back of the canvas. At least that's what the going price for Kinkade originals on Ebay was last time he checked...

Dad says it's a pretty good investment considering he can write off part of the money he spent as a donation since it was for Make A Wish!!

I have a fair amount of baseball cards (around 100,000 between my apartment and my parents house) as well as sports memorabilia. I have some things that are worth quite a bit, and if you're not into sports you really wouldn't see the value at all.

I also know people who collect pens - Mont Blanc and a few other companies put out limited edition pens that have quite a collector following.
