A few of the fraternity guys that I knew while I was pledging asked some of the girls to help them with their paddles. My Big ended up creating this awesome paddle for one of the guys! She painted the paddle like their flag and then on top of that put the wooden stuff. It looked very cool!!

A really cool one that I saw, one of the Phi Kaps in my school painted his big's paddle black and gold and on the border around it he wrote the fraternity's open mottoes. I thought that was really clever and unique.

For my big, I left the paddle the natural wood color. I had our letters vertically on the handle. Right below I had our crest (I cheated, I photcoppied it from my pledge book and decoupaged in on there...that sucker is HARD to paint!) I wote my Big's name in musical notes (notes that have more "value") and then below I wrote my name in "little" notes (like quarters, eights, sixteenths). Then I had a Harry Potter quote that said "Ah, music, a magic beyond all we do here". Because she LOVES Harry Potter and she's a music major. The I did our pledge year, and at the very bottom I had our motto. I turnd out very sweet. I liked it a lot.

Not to be a total Wet Blanky, but doesnt Paddles represent Hazing in the Friggen Risk Management World of Greeks?
Each of our Pledge/Associate Classes made Paddles @ 4-5 feet tall. Listed their Names and Officerships.
Well, it was decided that was wrong and therefore not right!
So, No more Huge Paddles!
These were Hung in the House and Alums would come back and look for them!
P C at its beastliness! Stupidiest at it best!
When In Rome?

Kappa fixed the paddle=hazing problem
Ours are shaped like keys, therefore they're much more like a plaque (like we use them for) rather than a real paddle.
The one I made for my big (my key sis) is painted a pretty shade of light blue with our crest, our letters, our names and little wooden keys on it (all painted silver and gold). Elegant key paddle for an elegant kappa.

your GLO/chapter doesn't, which is AWESOME, but sadly (and painfully I assume) there are some GLO chapters out there that do.

Yea we don't have paddles for our bigs, but each year the pledge class makes a pledgeclass paddle for the year before them, ours are like 3 feet long bout 5 inchest wide or something, with our colors, year you pledged, pledgeclass name, and members of the class

Thats what we did. We all made our big sisters SOMETHING out of wood like a plaque but just not a paddle. This way we avoid all of the "problems" with the paddles

SirHornyToad, that is the exactly thing I am talking about.
We did the 5' Paddles for years and LXA IHQ said no more as shows a "FORM OF HAZING". How in the hell are you going to swat someone with a Paddle that size?
They were really neat with Officers of the class and each member. Alums would come back with family and kids and look for their Paddle to show them with their name on it. They were hung all over the house and was always kind of neat to see who was in a certain class with whom.
But alas, the kibosh was put on that, like pissing on someones parade!
For dressing your paddle, Coat of Arms, Year, From to (Insert Names), College name a nice saying.

We make paddles...
For the big it has:
Letters
Big's name and big sis
Lil's name and lil sis
crest
pledge class
chapter
semster
And then we do stuff that reminds us of our big.
In the back we write something to the big

yea tom, we've got ours up back to the 50's
it's stupid because, as a former and current pledgmaster, and a former VP, i know/have seen every aspect of our program on paper and off, and i don't see how having someone do some wood working to make a paddle that's a tradition going back to the days when people actually got swated is hazing, its lame. Like we stopped that 20 years ago or something.

When I made a paddle for my big brother I had things that said
Lil Sis
Jennie (underneath Lil Sis)
Big Bro
Nate (underneath Big Bro)
Phi Sigma Kappa (IN greek letters)
Sigma Nu Phi (In greek letters)
I put his crest on it and I put a turtle on it (our mascot)
Then at the bottow I put a shot glass holder and found a shot glass with his letters on it and put it in the holder.
I also had Fall of '03 on it cause that is when I rushed and when he became my big brother.
He really liked it! I also left the paddle and everything the colors I bought them. I didn't want to paint them and mess them up. But like I said, he loved it

My bad...I post the wrong thing here. For my big sister I did just a normal paddle.
I went and bought a paddle, I painted it white, and then I put our letters diagnolly (sp) on the paddle (in the middle). And then to one side of the letter I put Lil' Sis: Jennie and Big Sis: Ryan. Then I painted our letters on the handle. And we have a "song" I guess you would call it, that we recite at the beginning of each meeting, and I put that on the back. I also painted daisey's and turtles on it. I also put my pledge class on it which was Fall of '03
