International Calling Cards

Does anyone know where I can purchase International Calling Cards? I see them advertised online a lot but the companies advertising them usually have unsatisfactory reports with the BBB. I've tried searching for them locally but the calling cards I find in stores are usually just for Long Distance in the US. Anyone have any suggestions?

My experience calling internationally is that it is usually cheaper to purchase calling cards locally then try to bring one with you.

Actually, I just got back from traveling internationally & I want to call my friends there so I want to purchase a calling card here to make international phone calls. Cheaper than using my cell phone carrier's plan that costs me $1.50 a minute to call India.

Ah...that changes things around a little bit

Have you tried using a computer service like dialpad (dialpad.com)? It claims to have rates from USA-India anywhere from 9.9-19 cents/minute.

Otherwise, i'm afraid I can't be much help...I can say the AT&T Global Pre-Paid phone cards are great, but i'm not sure if these are available off of military installations.

It depends on where you are calling to. Certain phone cards are good for South/Central America, but different phone cards are good for Asia or Europe.

When I spent my semester abroad, my family and I used the AT&T cards from Sam's Club or Walmart to do all of our calling. They have all the country codes, etc. on their website. The rate varies by country, but I know for Australia it took 4 domestic minutes off the card for every minute I talked to someone in the US, and vice versa. That was the cheapest method we found

I buy them all the time. You can purchase them at grocery stores. Usually they say for the US but they'll do international calls too. But, if not that, you can also buy them at the post office for sure. The problem I've found is that they usually don't give you more minutes internationally as opposed to the cards I've bought in the grocery store. For example, I just bought a card for 20$ at the postoffice. In the U.S. it is good for 230 minutes. For my calls to Sweden or Germany....its only good for 45 minutes.

Hope I helped.

Thanks for all the help you guys. I guess my biggest concern is whether its really worth buying a card if the money per minute just equals to be the same or more than what I'm paying w/ T-Mobile...which is $1.49/minute. I'll keep investigating! Thanks!

$1.49 a minute seems like a lot to me. I was paying about 25 cents per minute with the Sams Club AT&T cards. Here's a link that can help you find the rate. It's a bit of an expense up front, but it turns out to usually be a really good rate.

Skype

You should look into Skype - it's for calling other people on their computers or phones using internet telephony.
