OSU Greeks

Just saw an article on greekcentral.com regarding Ohio State losing three charters in one quarter...is this becoming a trend? The same thing almost happened at Colorado State (two charters gone, one other is starting over)...

It appears the main causes are hazing, not maintaining standards, and financial - the pressure is definitely on to be the brothers (and sisters) that our founder's wanted us to be.

I would like to hear your thoughts - are we being forced to do this with overwhelming pressure, or, have the times really changed that much, and has the pendulum swung back over?

Just curious which charters are leaving. By the way, when did you graduate and how are the Sigma Kappas there? I was just wondering...

I didn't go to OSU (Ohio State)...just saw a posting. I believe the charters were SigEp, Kappa Sigma, and Phi Beta Sigma...not sure, though.

Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Sigma (Skull), and Sigma Phi Epsilon are the fraternities from Ohio State that had their charters revoked for various reasons.

Kappa Sigma - Failed to comply with fraternity policies.
Phi Kappa Sigma - Low membership, Financial and Housing issues.
Sigma Phi Epsilon - Failed to implement their nationals new value system.

I think things are in reform right with many nationals, mainly for financial reasons. Too many lawsuits and the risk of being sued is out of hand lately. I don't think cleaning house is the answer to every fraternities problem, but at least they aren't trying to wipe them out like Dartmouth. Financial pressure is definitely a factor in every one of these decisions.

Also, I hear there is something happening here with Beta Theta Pi...I don't want to say why because I haven't heard concrete information, but everything else here that was rumor was true--Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and don't forget Delta Upsilon, are all gone at least for the time being. Its kind of scary when you think about the state of greek affairs here.

What do you hear about Beta Theta Pi?

yep all those houses are gone...I think SigEp is allowed to recolonize...I know they are sending out stuff for their philanthropy and their nationals is helping them...

Kap sig just f*&cked up big time. I have a lot of friends in that house and they knew they were walking on thin ice...skulls just sucked and always did...they had a small crappy house (think of animal house) but worse (by like X 100)

Beta is on probation...Delts are also on probation (I am sure most people know...it is do to the unfortunate passing of Joe Upshaw's overdosing on GHB in the house and then the violated their drug policy this summer at their national convention)

it is hard on the greek system right now here bc of a lot of rules, houses going under, administration, dry 2000 (both national policies and OSU's policies)...etc...

I heard Kappa Sigma just went underground. Is that true?

I am a member of a greek organization at OSU, and i can tell you yes Kappa Sig is gone, yes skull is gone and yes Sig Ep is gone, but will be returning in January of 2001. Other houses such as beta are doing just fine.
