Question What is Race?

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting on Greekchat, even though I have been observing this message board for quite some time, and I must say you all are some dynamic women and I am thrilled to join your ranks. I have an issue that I am quite interested in, and that is the idea of race.

In the book Racial Formation in the United States written by Michael Omi and Howard Winant, They state that some people think "race is an essance" while others think of "race as an illusion," what do you think?
Moreover, what do you think about the implications of race regaurding the purpose or your organizations?

Hello Anessa,

Looking at race from the perspective of Anthropology, it originated from a combination of climatology and migration. If you want me to continue, e-mail me privately.
As for the role of race regarding the purpose of my fraternity, check out my response to the EBONY ISSUE.... in the Alpha Kappa Alpha list.

Anessa, I think the way we look at race depends upon our various backgrouds. To answer your question, I can safely answer it from a communicologist's standpoint and ask several other questions such as, Does race matter? When does it matter? At what point does it become an issue? How does race issues affect my organization? Until we ask ourselves these questions and perhaps others and then answer them, I don't think we can truly answer the question, What is race...

Good topic!
