rush issues

We've got a new situation in our chapter that we've not had to deal with before, and I was just curious as to what other opinions concerning the matter were....
Appearently, we've got a young man considering rushing this semester. He's uncomfortable with the AGR's, and our rush chair encouraged him in our direction instead. There are anti-discrimination bylaws in place that seem to protect his right to rush. More than a few of the girls seem a little uncomfortable with this. Any thoughts/suggestions as to how this should be handled?

I do believe Sigma Alpha can not discriminate based on sex

Personally I think it's awesome to break tradional gender roles and if he's uncomfortable at AGR, be professional about it. He's probably looking for a way to get involved and network, which is what Sigma Alpha is all about. I think this would be a great opportunity to step up and show how diverse Sigma Alpha really is.

Be welcoming to him, he could be a big supporter of our mission to promote excellence in women excelling in agriculture. You never know! Even if he decides greek life is not for him, he could still be a good friend to the chapter.

I would also encourage you to work with your National Board chapter contact to discuss the concerns that some of the sisters may have, and to do so right away in order to prevent any issues arising with the chapter.

Just a comment on your unusual situation. I think its awesome that you are willing to branch out and I definitely think you should give him a chance.

We just pinned 34 last night as our Beta Class. Included in that group is a girl who immigrated from Italy and is learning english, a 30 year old, a Mom who is married and has a two year old, and various others. This is in addition to our vegan and two vegetarians, a girl of Chinese decent and some others of interesting backgrounds.

Sometimes its the differences that make your chapter unique and that give you the upper edge. Embrace those differences and use it as an opportunity to learn how to work through those differences.
