question stemming from the recruitment results thread
I am from a very small, private college so naturally, our sororities are pretty small in number (maybe 50-60 members tops). I'm just wondering what it's like to go through formal recruiment and get close to 50 new girls. How large are your chapters? How well do you get to know each other? And lastly, how many new members actually stay w/ the sorority and do not "de-pledge" before initiation?
Thank you!! I'm very interested in reading replies!!

I'll be interested to hear this, too. Our top pledge classes for all the chapters on campus usually sit at about 20 or so. Getting a pledge class over 30 would be unheard of for the most part. We're only 6% Greek and a large commuter campus.

well i know mu ohio was a large greek campus (5 alpha chapters and about 80% greek) and the typical pledge class for sororities was approx. 50-60. now my chapter didn't get that many, thus the reason we are no longer there. but from what i've been told by sisters from other chapters on campus, it's not great. it's a running joke on campus for girls to see someone wearing their letters on campus, but don't know who they are. i liked having a smaller chapter, but it ended up being the death of us on that campus.

The University of Kentucky sororities average 50-60 new girls each year with formal rush. I'd say that each chapter present on campus has a very healthy chapter size (100+) & although I admit that I never got to really know everyone that was in my sorority, a large chapter really helped me to find a place. There were some girls that I got along with very well, there were some girls that I didn't really know. Some other girls I knew but I didn't really get along with at all. The point is that we were all sisters that respected each other-it is a beautiful thing really.
And from my pledge class, we only lost 3 girls before Initiation. 2 girls we lost right after Bid Day & another girl we lost because of time constraints.

our results
I think we got about 9 girls from Formal Recruitment this fall. We're going through informal now.

We got a pledge class of 25 even though quota was 30 so we're going to do some COB events and I believe we're over total by 1 with 71 gals. However, I know every active & am working on getting to know every new member.

When I was still in school, the chapters weren't that huge (we were one of the smaller ones and had about 63 members), and while I was there our numbers were lower than normal, so we only go like 12 new girls here 15 new girls there, 8 new girls here....It doesn't matter to me, though, ecause I'd rather get 8 awesome girls and 40 warm bodies.
Anyhow, actually relating to the actual question - I guess it'd be kinda neat to have a class that big, just becuase you'd always have someone new to get to know or whatever, but I really don't think it'd be possible to PERSONALLY know everyone in the chapter. Know OF, yes, know WELl, no.
