I have made my decision about joining an NPC sorority

A few months back, I have asked you all about should I join a white sorority, even though I'm black. Well, I have decided to give the rush a go. If people don't like it, then that's too bad. If there are any negative comments, then I will delete this post. Please be kind to me. It was a hard decision for me,a nd I have been weighing the issues.

BTW, I will tell my mom about this after I get in. Wish me luck.

No negative comments but honestly if I were your mother I'd hate to be surprised with your decision. I understand why you might wait but you'd could be pleased with how your mother reacted to your decision. I didn't join my mother's sorority and while she was a bit bummed she was VERY supportive through the entire process. Just a thought to consider but as preciousjeni said do whatever is best for you.

I did read your first thread and I think I related my experience there. I was the first female in my family to go through rush, my uncle is a Kappa and now his son. But my mother and family didn't care what type of GLO I joined as long as I was happy. I can tell you that my rush week was what I termed "Hell Week", but I got through it and was very happy in my home.

Since I don't know your circumstances or your family situation all I can say is that I'm sure your mother would be very happy to know that her daughter has decided to give Greek Life a chance no matter the organization.

You never know....parents CAN surprise you...and as my mother STILL tells me to this day (I'm in my 30s) - "nobody knows you like your mother"....just keep that in mind and she MIGHT not be all THAT surprised in your decision.

That's great that you've made a decision, but is this really a "white sorority?" Or is it just a sorority that happens to be primarily white because the school's population is mostly white?

I've never heard of a "white sorority." I know there are historically black sororities, but I'd think if someone tried to have a "white sorority," they'd get a major race card pulled on 'em and there'd be some issues. Why join an organization noted for the race of its members?

so i hope that you'll forgive me if i repeat something already said.
i detected a little bit of hostility in this post-i don't know if it stems from reactions to your first post, or from people you know on your campus. you will achieve the best results if you approach recruitment with a friendly, open mind.

i have to ask, what helped you make your decision to participate in npc recruitment? and do you think that your mother would try to prevent you from joining a "white" sorority?

Rollergirl, you know how people feel about it being termed a "white sorority". You started that thread way back when you came to GC, it led to a lot of contraversy, and you know people's reactions.

My advice to you is to get this phrase out of your vocabulary. If you use this term during recruitment, you'll likely be cut so fast it'll make your head spin.

kddani's advice is solid. We're not trying to be sticklers, nor are we trying to be mean -- but if you're still thinking of it in terms of a "white" sorority, you'd better make darned sure that you don't call it that during recruitment.

Rollergirl, I am in full agreement with what kddani and my sister SisMadly said. If you would have said historically white, that would have been a little better! But your title can be a little offensive to non whites in NPC sororities

Hope a mod can change the wording in at the very beginning of the thread! (only a mod can do this)

I agree that calling any NPC a "white" sorority would be starting off on the wrong foot. You would make an impression, but not one that you want.

I wish you in the best in your pursuit of sorority membership. There are literally dozens of threads that address NPC recruitment. They might give you some ideas of what to expect.

I'm not even gonna touch the "white sorority" comment.

Do let your mom know though. She may suprise you. My mother is a very dedicated Delta and I thought she'd be upset that I decided to COB. She was very excited that I decided to do my own thing and supports me 100%. She even attended our 106th Founders Day/Parent's Day Celebration. Heck, we even exchange sailboat/elephant gifts.

If you'd change your thinking from a strictly race issue, this would probably be alot easier. I never thought of it as a white/black issue, just me finding my greek home. Heck, they could've been purple and orange for all I cared

I have read all the posts and I find it interesting that a decision has basically been made without the future rushee even having rushed and met the girls from the various GLO's. Chapters change from year to year in composition of their members. I've heard my organization stereotyped as "a white sorority" or a "Jewish sorority" however on multiple campuses, my organization is anything but these "stereotypes". I've heard of organizations "getting into trouble" for this kind of thing. I would hope that any potential new member of an organization would go and meet all of the sororities on their campus, national, local, black, white, red, green, whatever. One may not even like the members of an organization they have in their head they want to join. I've also known of instances where legacies have joined another organization for multiple reasons, primarily #1 being you should join an organization YOU feel most comfortable in. This is just a general rule of thumb for any potential new member, not just the person who started this thread. Most people I know too who have joined a GLO joined because of the people they met in the organization, and didn't just randomly say "I think I will join D*Phi*E today". The main reason I joined my organization was because I met some of the sisters and they were cool, people came from so many different backgrounds (and "races"), lifestyles, etc. and in all honestly, I began a new member process in another GLO and that one just wasn't for me. Anyways, good luck whatever you decide, but like anything in life, KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN

Rollergirl, you can only worry about making yourself happy. Like a local clergyman said here in Atlanta, "Everybody ain't happy 'bout your stuff!" Bask in the sunshine of those that support you. Thumbs up for giving your mom the chance to be supportive by telling her in advance.

BTW, I might be NPHC, but I completely agree with kddani and Sistermadly. If you can't get past using "white sorority", then can you truly be their sister? Don't miss out on something good for you just you can't get some words out of your head.
