Question About Birth Control

I was just wondering how many of you are on birth control which, if any, health insurance plans cover prescriptions for birth control. Thanx.

There is a pretty long thread about Birth Control methods in the "Dating and Relationships" forum.

Regarding insurance, I know NY State has to cover all oral contraceptives, regardless of the reason. That might just be for private insurance, though. I have an Aetna policy, and I've never had a problem. If you're a student, you should be able to go through a pharmacy that can give you a discount.

I'm on a Humana PPO (I think? whatever it is that's better than an HMO but still crappy) and it covers mine, but they're for "medical reasons" and I'm not sure if it wouldn't otherwise.

Oh ok thanx. My doctor just put me on Seasonale, also for medical reasons and I was curious to see my parents' health insurance would pay for it.

Most of them do, but not all...ours is very reasonable, it's less than PP would be - I think we pay $20 for six months or something.

Sometimes it's cheaper from the school, too. I got mine at the student health center and it was $3/month. I didn't claim it on insurance because I didn't have to.

Man I wish I could do that. My school was founded by catholic priests but it's now non-denominational (READ: we still have huge crosses hanging on the sides of buildings and priests teaching classes and serving as advisors). Our school is really conservative when it comes to things like this. They won't even hand out condoms on campus despite the fact that one of our freshman dorms was the #17 most sexually active dorm in America.

Mine can prescribe it for health reasons, but we can't get it dispensed on campus -- and we have no condoms here either. Considering we're named after one of the most famous Jesuits after Loyola, it doesn't surprise me.

New York State is one of the states that requires private insurers to pay for BC regardless of health reasons. So, unless you have a health plan sponsored by a religious organization, or a plan based out of another state, you should be fine. In that case, you should be able to lobby for health reasons if the provider puts the reason (ie, painful periods, taken due to being prescribed Accutane) on the prescription.
