Fines for being below total?

I think I read somewhere that some NPC groups are insisting that all their chapters be at total - and are enforcing it by fining chapters who are not!

Is this true? I sure hope that I misread it somewhere, because it goes against logic. Smaller chapters have higher per active costs and usually need all the money they can get!

Yep. Either total or a certain number of sisters. I read this too, and I think it's BS. Plus it can put a horrible thought in the pledges' minds - "wow, do they like me, or did they just bid me to avoid the fine?"

I think we have a minimum amount of insurance we have to pay that's based on a certain chapter size, but that's different. From what I've read this is a straight up fine, no services received.

Unhappy

Yes, that was on the Legislative Table at LXA Gen Assembly, for minumin 20 Members, it was tabled. For those that did not have 20, they had to pay for 20, and that is for Risk Management, by the by.

While a valid point was brought up, the number of Small Chapters depending on the Size of College, The Greek enrollment was a heated debate to say the least.

While the intent was good, well, to say the least, it was flawed, I was one arising to the Floor to speak against it while setting next to My Brother Who Proposed it.

Oh, FYI, He is On GC and We are Still Close Brothers!

We absolutely do not have any such policy. Chapters that aren't at total simply get a lot more resources to help them overcome barriers to recruitment on their campus. I can't see punitive measures like that working. I think that awards and incentive programs are much more successful.

we do not have this policy. i would think that any such policy would be couterproductive to the national organiztion.

Exactly!

I come from an extremely small chapter (last fall we had 7 sisters - the chapter then proceeded to recuit 20 in the year ). Instead of punishing us, Kappa HQ has done nothing less than offer its full support in terms of helping us achieve our potential.

Being small hurts. There are so many fees that are not dependant on the exact number of actives - like insurance, bank/treasury fees, costs of fraternity visitors, convention etc etc. The smaller you are, the more of your dues go these costs and not the fun stuff. To fine chapters over this is creating an excessive financial strain on the chapter.

I think that would hurt the smaller chapter rather than helping it.

I have never heard of an ADPi chapter being fined for being below total. Chapters below campus total receive assistance from their District Team of International Officers in creating more effective COR/COB programs and membership retention activities.

A chapter that is under total is operating at a financial loss. To fine a chapter that is already in the red only strains chapter finances further and increases dues. I think there are more effective ways to encourage a fiscally healthy chapter to grow-- such as giving awards and financial grants to chapters that are successfully at total.

The reason there is a drive for chapters to operate at total is so that the chapter expenses: house, leadership trainings/trips, chapter operations, etc., operate in the black and not in the red. By achieving chapter total and collecting dues from all members, chapters (which have non-profit org status) can operate and flourish. There's nothing wrong with a small chapter that is at its campus total. But there are problems when total is set at 100 and none of the chapters on campus is above 30. Campus then needs to lower its total.

D Phi E does not fine chapters that are under total. That, to me, seems awful silly. Where are you all hearing this?

I've not heard this yet, either. Can someone tell me where you are getting this info? I'd like to learn more about it.

The Kappa Phi Club has something like a fine for not being under a certain amount of sisters. If a chapter has less than 14 sisters they are supposed to pay a certain amount for each sister they don't have (if that makes any sense). However, I don't remember our chapter ever paying those dues. I think it's a way to keep up retention and recruitment.

I honestly didn't know this. Wouldn't this be counterproductive to some of our chapters b/c quite a few are under 14?

Just to add for informational purposes, Tri Sigma does not have this policy.
