Anyone graduate with an Exercise and Sports Science degree?
I am just wondering, because I have been looking at the job market lately and there seems to be just about nothing available for this field. I will be certified by the american college of sports medicine as an exercise specialist. I graduate spring 05. I know its kind of early to be looking, but I am trying to get idea as to what I can do with this major. Anyone else in a similar situation? Does anyone know of someone with this major and what they intend to do with it?
Thanks ya'll!

My daughter "BlazerCheer" will graduate next spring with a degree in that. I think she's going to apply to physician's assistant school.

One of my best friend's did that, and she lived at home for the year after she graduated, doing nothing. She eventually got a parks and rec job that she's not too fond of, but at least she's working now. I think it's a really hard field, try to get some good internships/connections. Good luck!

Thanks! I have been looking into the tourism industry. Resorts and spas with a fitness program I think are definite possibillities. Some look more promising then others. They also have cardio rehab tharapy in some hospitals which my major is qualifying.
Carnation will your daughter get her ACSM certification?

Yes. I think she's frustrated, though, with the options that are out there and doesn't know what she'll do if PA school doesn't work out. A friend's son just got an exercise science degree from Ole Miss and he now realizes that he doesn't want to spend his life watching people exercise...he's now subbing at a middle school and evaluating his options. I hope that BlazerCheer doesn't regret her choice of major a year from now.

A cousin of mine has this degree from Florida State. She's now a personal trainer at a club in Chicago. Last I heard she really liked it but I get the impression that you might not be interested in that work.

Working as a PT would be ok for a short period of time, but I couldn't afford to live in DC on a PT's salary alone. This major was not what I intended. I transfered to a Maryland school with the hope of being an athletic trainer/physical therapist. The school I am at now screwed me over last fall when they said I would complete the program in 2 years and are now telling me it would take 3 (I would be in school 7 years total if I didn't change majors and thats just a bachelors degree). I feel stuck, with no real path. I am leaning toward trying to find a job and then getting a second bachelors in nursing. I have a strong science background from my previous school so it will only take me a year to get an accelerated BSN.
I just hope that I figure out something soon. Thanks for the advice though!

Degree
When it comes down to landing that great job, it's all about who you know. I've seen communications and RTVF people join my world in Finance/Accounting.

Whats an RTVF? While connections are important it doesn't mean your qualified to work in finance if you graduate in music. I just wonder how many people are in my field and what options are there jobwise post graduation. Good point though.

RTVF
RTVF is Radio, Television, and Film...not that many schools offer it and I didn't graduate with a music degree. That's so stereotypical. Regards, Boodleboy322

How is that stereotypical? For the past 6 years I have interned for a major corporation, I know plenty of people who work here that graduated with degrees in different areas, but they got additional training for their positions (but their degrees were also somewhat related to the positions they are in). I can't apply for a job as a developer if I don't have the right skill set. College is meant to prepare you by all means. As a sport science major I am not qualified to be a data analyst or developer for a mortgage company. With additional training/schooling I could be, but the chances of me getting hired with no related major are slim to none. Thats fact, not stereotypical. I know this because I have been in the corporate world, I know what its like.
I also didn't mean that you were a music major, I was using that as an example. I am sorry if you took it as an insult. I wasn't trying to be rude.

What about an athletic trainer (or is that a different degree?). I also know people around here in Arkansas are Rec Therapists (for hospitals, psych wards, children's hospitals, etc). The job market is saturated here, though. You might be able to do that at those kids' daycares that include gymnastics and such (teaching the kids basic exercise skills).
Carnation, I'm sure BlazerCheer would be qualified as a cheer coach if she wanted to do that.
I'm just guessing here...I really don't know much about the degree.
