A heartfelt thanks to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Hi! This is my first post, so don't be surprised if you don't recognize my handle. I've been viewing GC for a while now, hopping in between the forums. I'm not actually a greek, but I plan on belonging to a fraternity one day.
My mother is an Alumni of Arkansas State University. ASU is one of the schools on my list. Today, my mother drove me up to ASU so I could talk to some advisors and such. On the way up there, she told me about an experience she had in college.
In her freshman year, she was put in a room with a HORRIBLE woman. She smoke, she drank, she wasn't at school to learn; at one point she threatened my mother. Eventually, she got arrested. Even after she'd gotten arrested, she still managed to harrass my mother. She attempted to attack my mother with a knife; luckily she was not hurt. To some it may not seem like it, but it was a very traumitizing experience for my mother. She was ready to drop out of college because she thought that her whole experience was going to be that way.
After all of this was over, my mother was moved into another room with several women. These women had heard about the experience she'd had, and they quickly and willingly embraced her. They convinced her to stay in school and raised her dwindling self-esteem. These women were AKAs. They treated her like a sister, and as a result, my mother completed a successful college career. Since those women were so nice to my mother, she pledged AKA.
I said that to say this; THANK YOU! My mom probably wouldn't be where she is now if it weren't for those beautiful women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorperated. I just want you ladies to know you have a new fan ^_^.
