Burbon vs. Scotch

Whast the difference? I know they are both a type of whiskey, but whats the difference in taste, method of production and history.

Taste wise I think I like burbon better.

To be legally named 'Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey', it must meet the following:

• It must be made in the United States (specifically Bourbon County, Kentucky)
• It must contain 51% corn
• It must be aged at least two years in new, charred oak barrels

Scots Whisky (it's 'whiskey' everywhere else but Scotland and Canada, where it's 'whisky')

Only after a minimum of three years maturation can the new make spirit be legally defined as Scotch whisky. In practice, most Scotch whisky matures for much longer - from five to fifteen, twenty, or twenty-five years and sometimes longer. It is this lingering period during which Scotland’s cool, clean air steals through the porous oak of the casks and charms their contents, contributing further to the smooth and golden character of each distillery’s unique creation. The different for the Heathens From Texas, is:

American Whisk"e"y is spelled with The "E"!

It is aged with and cooked with Charcoal.

Scothish Whisky (No "E"), is heated and cooked over peat dug up and cut from the Scotish Highland Peat Bogs. Ergo, the smokey taste.

I think bourbon was the first kind of alcohol I ever had. Liked it just fine!! I only drink scotch if I am already drunk (guess by then it doesn't matter)

I was at a conference last week. A man who has been very influential/important within the organization is retiring, so he was roasted at one of the banquets. He happens to be from Tennessee. One of the presenters did a slide presentation, which included the following:

I'm a big fan of both whiskey and scotch, though I prefer scotch. Scotch neat or whiskey on rocks has become my favorite going out drink (although that causes problems to my wallet).

I prefer Scotch to Burbon, but i like Rye Whisky (Canadian Whisky) even better.

nothing goes down smoother than Crown on the rocks.

Definitely a fan of the Single Malt over blended, Glenmornagie Port Barrel is my particular favourite.

But I have to admit I'm also a fan of the good'ole Rye & Ginger when out drinking.

Any Single Malt will do, some better thatn others!

Actually, Irish Whisky is damn good. Not as smokey as Scotch Whisky.

Neat is only way with maybe a cube or two! GA was the only way to go in Room!

Damn did I get screwed up in Wales with Neat Scotch!
