rule of thumb in the Ames are to avoid speeding tickets:
10 over in 30 to 45 zones, drop 5mph between 11pm and 6am.
15 over in 55 to 65 zones on the highway and 15 to 20 over on the Interstate, drop 5mph between midnight and 4am

oh- I heard most places in CA the minimum cost for a speeding ticket is $75? I've never gotten one above $41 here in IA

it has been 10 months since my last ticket *knock on wood*.
the first few years of driving, i was really bad. i had a lot of growing up to do. when a judge says to you, 'i do not want to see you in this courtroom again' after looking at your driving record, it is time to get serious.

i finally got myself to not care about other drivers. here in Jacksonville, most people are just vicious on the road. they do not care about anyone else.

i still get tempted and want to speed every now and then. then again, how many people do not get tempted?

i remember two years ago, i got pulled over at 2 a.m. so the cop naturally asks if i had anything to drink. my innocent my mind doesnt realize that he is talking about alcohol, so i say that i had a fruit punch earlier he looks at me like i was trying to be smart with him. oops.

i am crossing my fingers that i make it through 2004 without a ticket. i have gotten a ticket for different reasons every year since my i got my license. the longest that i have gone without a ticket is 15 months but that was over the course of 2 years....so *knock on wood*

That must be nice. Speeding tickets here start at $100 & move up for every 3 MPH over you are!

Speeding tickets here start at $131. If you go more than 20 mph over the posted limit, it jumps much higher.

You're lucky it was just a ticket.

I don't know what kind of rules you ahve where you are, but in Ontario we have a demerit point system.

16-29 km/h would have resulted in 3 points on your license.

Once you reach 6 points, you license could be suspended for a month. When you hit 9 points, it's suspended for either 3 or 6 months.

Then after that suspension you're back down at 6. If you hit 9 points again, you're suspended for a year.

It's rough.

I've been blessed enough to receive 2 speeding tickets. I've been pulled over with a warning countless times. I'm really bad about it. I don't even realize I'm speeding until I see flashing blue and red lights behind me.
In Florida, you get points on your license for your tickets and the insurance companies just LOVE to increase your premiums by $200 per month for those points. Luckily, we have the option to go to traffic school.

Sorry to hear it!

I've only ever gotten warnings <knock on wood>, but my husband has gotten a couple of tickets. My favorite was the cop who said "I clocked you at 73, but I'm feeling generous, so I'm only giving you a ticket for doing 70." IT'S THE SAME FINE!!! And this was in an old clunker that could do 65... tops... on a good day... if you were going downhill.

Many US states have a point system. Speeding results in 2-4 points depending on how fast you were going. Too many points and it's bye-bye license. The points stay there for a few years, but you can usually take a safe-driver course from an auto school to get points taken off sooner. The good news is that most states don't communicate points to other states, so if you get an out-of-state ticket you don't get points. (Exception: I think NY and NJ inform each other about points.)

Here in NC, they're supposed to take your license from you if they pull you for doing 15 over. I don't think it's enforced too often though.

Yes - I really miss that about FL - being able to take the class and not get the points on your license. You still have to pay the ticket though, which sucks. And pay for the cost of the class.

Anyone ever get a speeding ticket and not pay it? What happens? When I was in college, I took a road trip to see my friend in TN. I got pulled by a state trooper, and he wrote me a ticket. I couldn't afford to pay it at the time...and they never sent me a reminder thingie. I've been back to the DMV several times since then, and every time I've asked them if there was anything on my record that needed to be taken care of, and they've said it was clear. So...I don't know.

On the other hand, I have a friend who was sitting at his desk at work one day, when 2 cops showed up and arrested him for having an outstanding ticket from NY from like 5 years ago....

Y'alls tickets are weak. Here in Oklahoma, back in '97 I received my last ticket... I believe it was around $120 for going 69 in a 45. They've increased a lot since then. I've heard that one town that borders mine has been known to slap people with $600 speeding tickets. The local newspaper did a story on them that showed about 70% of their municipal revenue is from speeding tickets.

I thought it was customary that on the first time you're ever pulled over the officer simply gives you a warning, unless you're going ridiculously fast. I was going 78 in a 65 the first time ever in my life to be pulled over and the asswipe still gave me a ticket. Other than that I have a perfect driving record.

i do not think that is in Florida. at least, it never happened to me. i mainly got jerks for cops.

anywho, several years ago, i got pulled over on school campus. the cop actually asked me if i can afford the $100 ticket. i told her no cause i seriously couldn't. then she said that because i could not afford it, i could go with a warning i wish all the cops asked that, then my record would be ticket free!
