Work Study and Rush
I'm planning to rush, but I was awarded work study. My mother wants for me to work at the beginning of the school year, but I would like to wait until after the second week of school when rush is over. What should I do? I don't want to miss rush.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive--but I can't speak for your school and how much time rush takes up. Most of my friends worked in undergrad, and they signed up for their jobs during Orientation, where the work-study jobs (like the libraries and cafeterias) would recruit students. I don't think many of them started until maybe a week or two after classes started--when they knew their class schedules.

I'm with Munchkin. You don't want to start a brand new job before your class schedule is cemented!!

I have had workstudy every year I have been in school and it hasn't interfered with my being in the sorority. The whole purpose of a workstudy is to have a job that will work around your college schedule. Depending on the department you are in you won't even work in the evenings. Most of the time the bosses are very understanding about missing work. As long as you get your hours in for the week they really don't care. I am speaking from what I have seen, it might be totally different at your school. The only problem I see with you waiting to start work after recruitment is that sometimes if the student doesn't show up to work within the first couple of days, the department will give your spot to someone else. If you really want to wait to start working I would go to your boss first and explain what is going on. Good luck

I also have workstudy and it usually didn't start until the second or third week of school... so plenty of time to rush and settle in! Why don't you call your Student Employment office for specifics to tell your mom?

Ditto that. My boss usually wasn't even ready for me right away! I usually took the first week or two of the semester off, so you should be fine. And I believe Recruitment takes place on the weekend or in the evenings, so you should be ok!

I have workstudy as well, but mine started the first week of school. Here, the good jobs are gone by the end of the first week. If you get work, and you get your schedule, most places have half parties. These are where you go to the houses, but for only half the time since you may have class or work or whatever. You might check on that as well. But, like I said, I did work study and it didn't interfere with my sorority activities.

I would definitely emphasize that you should snatch up a job as soon as you get on campus, but just ask if you can wait a week or two to start while you get settled. Your boss should understand. Or just ask if you can have that week off for Recruitment.
