Hurricane Relief
All Sorors, Sisterfriends and chapters of ALL BGLOs who inquired privately and publicly about sending Aid/Relief supplies to Jamaica, please do so as soon as possible to the address at the bottom of this post. Of PRIMARY need is bottled/drinking water. Also needed are canned goods and clothing. Please remember to specify from whom or what entity/chapter the donation is coming from so that you/it may be acknowledged. Thank you everyone!
Please send all aid to:

Are you sure we can we send large packages or boxes to a PO Box?
ETA: on Delphi I also asked that folx be made aware that monetary contributions would not be tax-deductible. Thus that reference.

Same reply I posted on Delphi (LOL)...
Ladygreek, our chapter is investigating the specifics of tax compliance as relates to Jamaica. Gee, I didn't even realise that people MIGHT want to make monetary donations. Wow. I hope they don't send them through the mail...
The question about the P.O. Box. Yes, it is possible to receive large packages. We just have to pick them up at the post office (non-taxable items) or at the wharf if they are detained by Jamaica Customs for tax and duties to be paid.

Ditto - LOL
No, the tax issue is because you requested that the items be sent to Jamaica Alumnae. Delta like all of the D9 is a 501(c(7), thus donations are not tax-deductible. They would have to go through a (c)(3)like DREF to be so.
The other issue is that many of the Express or overnight deliverers will not do so to a P.O.Box, and sending through regular mail could take hella long. So that is why I want to get as much detail as possible for people to send aid.

Yes, I saw. But not everyone here is on Delphi so they may be interested in the responses, too.

All persons who wish to send hurricane relief items, please delay until I have confirmed a shipping/mailing address to receive said items. Those who have already sent things, please email us at dstjac@hotmail.com or dstjac@dstjac.com . Let us know who you are and what was sent. Thank you.

Sorors and Sisterfriends,
I managed to sort out the entire hurricane relief situation yesterday. I've been advised by Jamaica Red Cross that all boxes, crates, packages, barrels etc. must be sent through them to the mailing address at the bottom of this email. All monetary contributions can be sent in the form of manger's cheques or money orders made out to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Jamaica Alumnae and sent to the chapter's PO Box address which is also listed below. We prefer not to give funds directly to the local relief agencies as we have heard recent horror stories re monetary donations. We will disburse these funds ourselves or purchase what is needed and hand it over to those in need. Items needed are tarps, bed linen, clothing, bottled water and anything else that one would like to send. Bottled water is the most URGENT item on the list.
Thank you for your assistance. I will keep you updated on what is happening locally.
