Guys Vs Girls
So we had another orientation session today. My fraternity had a table along with the other hundred organizations on our campus. So when all the kids came over to look at the tables there were a crap load of girls going over to the sorority tables and very few guys checking out the fraternities. Whats the deal?

It's probably because girls are "joiners". We love being a part of something. In most cases girls don't really have to know anyone in a particular club or sorority to go out and rush, granted it's more fun to rush when we do it with friend
I've learned that guys rush/join those house where their friends are. I'm not saying that guys are scared to go it alone, but it's just an easier transition for guys to do it that way.
That's probably why there are more girls checking out sororities then there are guys checking out fraternities.
Just give it time. I know it's kind of discouraging to see all the sororities have full tables of girls getting information, but it will happen. When guys do come by, think of them as lil' bros and take an interest and make friends with those guys that you think will make great borthers.
That's kind of what my chapter did, we pinpointed certain girls that we met at orientation and through different summer programs and we kept in touch with them over the summer and it really helps we initiated some quality girls with which we had already established great realtionships.
That's just my .1993 worth.

I've encountered that too at recruitment. We are co-ed and have had more females than males show interest. Sometimes its best having fliers to hand to the guys as they walk by or candy on the table (notice that they can't help the food).

Yeah we had two great guys stop by. They were really awesome. We're going to send them more info about the fraternity in August.

We have similar results with our "tables". That's why we don't always participate in the big campus-wide recruitment things. We find that directly contacting guys that meet our requirements works better.
It may be stereotypical, but a guy is more likely to be interested if you go to them to ask them to check you out.

Yeah...we are doing that as well. On our application students check if they are interested in greek life. We are sending them a letter and invitation to one of our events.

I think my point is not to just focus on the people that are interested. One of the easiest ways to get guys to join is to make friends with them first -- whether they are interested or not. People change their minds.

I guess Dartmouth probably has a lot of out of staters so it would be a little more difficult and expensive to do it the way we do at state schools.

I agree that it is easier to attract girls than guys for all the above mentioned reasons. I think that guys would be more prone to join something if they were friends with the guys already. I also think that guys are already so actively involved in other activities (not that girls aren't) like sports teams and bands that they feel more like they don't have time for a frat. I dated a guy for 4 years in undergrad who was on the baseball team (and in a band). They were such a tight-knit group of guys that were already friendly with the frats and due to the time constraints of pledging is why him and his teammates chose not to go Greek then. Also many guys may feel they already have enough friends, why join a frat? These are just basic observations and by no means should totally be taken to heart, as I don't want to "stereotype" anyone. I think that girls are more into looking to make new friends when they go away to school which is why going Greek appeals to them more. I also recently met the actives of the Alpha chapter of D*Phi*E at NYU. They told me that they really don't get a lot of freshmen that pledge because they are so caught up in the "new college experience". However, by sophomore year, so many girls come to rush because they say that it was really hard for them to make friends first year. I say focus on older guys too to join, because it is probably the same for them as well. Good luck with your recruitment!!!!!

Brief Background
UMass Dartmouth, what we like to call the other UMD, is a state school with a population of 7500 undergrads. 90 percent are in-state. We have a small greek system but it is growing. My freshman year in 2001 year there were 2 fraternities and 2 sororities. Now there are 5 fraternities and 3 sororities. On average fraternities have about 20 members. Sororities on average have about 40. I would love for Greek Life to grow even more, but like they say Rome wasnt built in a day.
