Teaching Abroad

I did a GC and a google search on this and i didn't really come up with much! Does anyone know anything about teaching at k-12 schools abroad? Like on U.S. military bases or teaching English in a foreign speaking country?

Well I have lots of friends in asian countries teaching English. In China my buddy will make money and have hardly any expenses there. At the same time he loves the experience of new people, new places, learning the language there better, and the teaching aspect. I can find out about his program for you if you'd like. Until I withdrew my Peacecorps application, I was considering teaching English through it among a couple other things.

None of my friends are getting back to me. If they do, I'll let you know. But look into peacecorps. See if you can teach in former soviet countries like kazhakistan (spelling?). That way you have that impressive name on your resume but also don't have to spend those couple years in a hardship country without clean water and electricity to do it.

There are civilian teaching positions on army bases abroad. I have one friend whos parents teach on a base in Germany and another friend who teaches on a base in Italy. I'll try to find more information for you.

Ditto what Rudey said about the Peacecorps. It's a great way to teach abroad.

I looked through our classified ads and found this...

lromer55@yahoo.com/ 800-852-5678

Spec. Ed. Teaching Positions in Japan and Germany. You may not have an interest in Spec. Ed, but you may use this information to get information on regular positions abroad.

My mom had several Army wife friends who were teaching on the base, I believe - they were in Germany and she loved it there!

If you still don't get anywhere with this, let me know. I've subbed on our base elementary school in Germany. It's a really cool program for the teachers that want to do it!

try this link http://www.odedodea.edu/pers/employment/application/

It looks like applications should be submitted by early January for the 2004-2005 school year.

Good luck!

You can do a web-search of American boarding schools abroad...often they hire recent college graduates as interns for a year; your expenses are paid, and you get a stipend and get to travel with the students wherever they go. You have to teach and do the whole resident assistant deal. I was considering doing that for a while.

I went to high school at an American army school in Germany, very fun! There are some quality teachers that teach at these schools, for sure. Lots of my friends had teacher parents, and I also know some teachers at the elementary school -- they all love it!
Basically anywhere there's an Army/Air Force/Navy base abroad with families, there's a school, like in Germany, England, the Netherlands, Korea, Japan, Turkey, Spain, Italy, etc.
What I've heard of a lot of teachers doing is going to one place, staying like 3-5 years, and then transferring to somewhere else. When they transfer between places like this, their transportation and moving expenses are all paid for. (NICE benefit.) Also while living abroad, their rent is paid for, and they get supplemental money when the local exchange rate is bad. (Like right now, with the dollar doing really badly against the euro.)
Then there are teachers who've lived in the same place for the last 20 years or more and taught at the same school. Both moving around and staying put are possible.
It's a really nice deal for the teachers who do it -- and who wouldn't want to spend their summer breaks travelling around Europe???

This is something I am interested in doing as well. There is a teacher I work with who has a brother who works for the DOD as a teacher. He says it is an incredible program and loves it!

I would love to hear more stories from people who have done it!
