The big problem with Disney is that it has expanded to so many areas that it has lost its character.

It's hard to get back to your core self when you have lost your identity.

Disney is a cult. Seriously.

I worked at the Disney Store for a year. Not only do you have to wear the idiotic uniforms and PANTYHOSE WITH SOCKS, you are required to constantly be smiling and happy. Now, I'm a pretty upbeat person by human nature, and smile the vast majority of the time. When I would leave there, my cheeks would hurt. Your make-up has to be natural, however they refer to it as "All American". "Cast members" (aka employees) only work 4 hour shifts at a time, so that they're "fresh" for their "performance". I was told, when I requested more hours (I was a struggling student) that people didn't work there for money, they did it for "love of The Mouse". Whatever.

I've found very few people just "like" Disney. They are either haters (such as me) or scary obsessive. A sister of mine went two summers to the Disney Summer Intern program. All she ever talks about is Disney, and her plans to move to Florida to work there full-time. This is a 28 year old woman with a MBA.

My second cousin is a VP for Disney. He's in charge of all of the entertainment at Disney's hotels and parks. When I was probably around 7-8 years old, we went down to Orlando, got into the parks for free and then were given VIP tickets (best seats) to the shows and got to sit in the "Grand Marshal" car in the parade. It kicked butt.

Haven't seen Richard since then though. He never has come off to me as having a "cultish" relationship with his company. However, the job has treated him very well. Since this is a Greek msg board, I should mention he's a Beta from Oklahoma U.

I agree that it's cultish. Everyone I've ever known who did College Program comes back brainwashed and OBSESSED. One of my suitemates even had "Carey and Mickey's room" written on her door with mouse stuff everywhere. We had to study Disney in my wealth and poverty class, and she tried to tell me that everything I learned about the evils of Disney was false because "Disney is the happiest place on earth." I've known people to graduate Summa Cum Laude and end up working a ride or concessions at Disney just so they can live there. I think some of these people need counseling.

Yeah, I read the Vanity Fair article on this a couple of months ago. Apparently Roy Disney and his cohorts are extremely influential in the company. The irony is that Disney has been highly profitable under Michael Eisner's control but he is still highly criticized for changes to the brand image, loss of company focus, and of course, being a major a__hole.

A few years ago, I had a TV director who worked for me here in Denver. He was one of the last of the original hippies: long hair, beard, known on occassion to do some controlled substances and gallons of Budweiser and shots.

He left and went to another TV station. A couple of years later, he called and asked to use me as a reference for a job as production manager for the TV department at DisneyWorld.

When a nice lady called to check the reference, I just had to ask -- and she cut me off about half way through the question to say, "He knows the hair and beard have to go."

I saw him in Orlando a year or so later, and honestly would not have recognized him if we hadn't arranged to meet.

I don't think that Disney is "cultish." Hey, if I worked for a company that provided great benefits and a very attractive salary, my grown ass would be all about "The Mouse" too.

I was offered a job by Disney right after I got my doctorate. My salary offer was so low--it was the standard offer for newbies--that I would've actually been at poverty level in Orlando. They were so shocked that I declined and said, "But you'd be working on a firsthand basis with MICKEY!!"

What was with that? I would have been working in the Land Pavilion at EPCOT.

Although I don't know for sure, I hear that their salaries are very low for the most part.

I saw their benefits some years ago, and they seemed pretty good. Don't know how they are now.

If "Uncle Walt" knew how things have been going since Eisner came along, he'd be rolling in his cryogenic preserving tank.

I have a few friends who work for Disney both at the park or in Burbank ( HQ) and their salary and benefits are average.

They don't expect 100% they expect 150%. I have friends who once worked at Walt Disney Co. in Burbank and they log in some serious hours; overworked at times and not the treatment they once had pre Eisner .

Uncle Walt treated his employee's very well , but since EISner came in the magic is gone.

As much as I LOVE Disney and always wanted to work for Disney..... from the stories i hear it is not what it once was thanks to Eisner and his ppl.

I also have to say this too for someone who is at the park ( Prem Passholder) A LOT and have been going ever since i was a born( a true Disney family) i have seen a big difference over the yrs and towards thel atter yrs too. The enviorment and little touches you once seen are just not there, I miss those days and i miss the special feeling you get when you pass those gates. I just havent felt them in the last few yrs and it isn't because i go there all the time it is just that Eisner has taken so much luster away and left it just an amusement park.
