NPC or Local rule
On our campus it is consiered hazing if we leave our house for any reason. Some of our activities we used to do we have to move to sisterhood activities and we can't take our new members. Is this an NPC rule or our Greek advisor being rediculous?

I think you'll have to give us more information....
I'm not sure what you mean by "leaving your house" is hazing. Does this mean all of your NM activites have to be in the house? It also depends on what activites you are talking about. If you are requiring your NM's to do activities when you don't require your actives to do anything, that MIGHT (but not always) be considered hazing. Once again, depends on exactly what's going on.
Can you give us some examples?

This could be an interesting Thread if We knew exactly what, and why, and Where You are talking about.
Also if YOu can allow us to see what GLO you are talking about.
We dont really bite.
I am sure that you can PM Members on here to ask questions.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but I know that several (I'm not sure if all) NPC's have a rule that if you're doing any events in another town you have to fill out paperwork that needs to be submitted beforehand. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it gets to be annoying when your campus is close to the corporation line and the place you're taking them to (like an ice skating rink, bowling alley, or a movie theater), is actually only 5 minutes away.

Alright... sorry... I guess that was confusing... sorry I suck... anyways....
Leaving the house... what this means is all NM activities must be contained to the house. We don't force anyone to do anything they are uncomfortable with and all activites we do... you can do in front of your grandma, but some are outside. We do one about our local history and one where we need a bigger room. I guess before my class they did a sister search (where they had to find all the sisters).
I think I am just confused because I think it is the stupidest rule ever, wouldn't the scary hazing kinds of things be contained to a house???
I don't understand who's rule it is......

I knew lots of hazing that occur in the sorority house. I have to say that i think it is stupid to not allow activities to take place outside of the house.
However, maybe they are trying to make a blank statement to try to control somethings that can be hazing. For example. I have heard of sororities requiring for big sis/little sis where the little sis had to go to all the frats on campus to get their little sis gifts and find clues to figure out who their big sis is. Now, it might sounds harmless, however if the guys were jerks (as some are) and would not give the items to a little sis with out her doing something for them this could be bad, or if someone was shy then this activity would not be good and could be considered hazing. Maybe this is what is trying to be prevented from not allowing activities outside of the house. Maybe you should get things clarified instead of just a blanket statement of not out of house activities.
Good Luck, debbie

It's not an NPC rule because not all sororities have houses. And I agree, if you're going to hard core haze you are obviously not going to do it in the middle of campus.
I think what they are trying to prevent is scavenger hunts across the campus/town. However, for the local history thing maybe you could use a room somewhere on the campus - is there some sort of all purpose room available?

that wouldn't fly in my house. One of our most important and sacred rituals happens outside (yes, in plain view of everyone and their mother). Taking this away would really really piss off our alumns, who you really don't want to mess with.

our house is very tiny, it only sleeps 5 at the max. We've (happily!) been recruiting larger and larger classes over the years, so our active chapter is at 26 right now, and any event we have at the house...we are CRAMMED like sardines! But I suppose that's a good thing

I keep reading this and am wondering if you understand the difference between House and Chapter?
A Chapter is made of the Members. A house is a building that is the focal point with letters on the out side.
Maybe I am simplifing some what.
So, you do not have a big House building that will accomodate all memebers. Many Chapters on Campi are not able to do that or even have a house and meet in dorms or student center but still function.
Say you have a house, rental, that will hiold xyz amount of people, if they are happy being plugged in like sardines, that is part of being a member.
We did that with the Local I started and did very well. It was a blast.
Why was it a blast, because, it was the focal point where when in doubt, go to the house and see who was there.
A fancy House does not a Chapter make, it is the People who make it. Interaction is what makes a GLO !

Oh...this is easy (well, maybe...depends on your chapter size). Politely inform them that if you have all of your active sisters and your new members inside your house for required activities/rituals/etc, you will be breaking fire code. Noone wants the administration to be requiring you to break fire code now do we?

As already said, it would probably depend on the activity.
For example, for my Big/Lil revelation, the bigs left costumes in the chapter room for the littles to wear (stuff like M&M's, not crazy/dirty things). When we tried to take pictures of everyone afterwards, it was impossible to get everyone in it at once, but we couldn't go outside to the front steps because if a girl was uncomfortable in her costume, it could be considered hazing to make her wear it outside.
I'd check your school's hazing policy. Stuff like what I mentioned, like making girls wear certain things "in public," could be hazing, but other stuff like a sisterhood picnic would probably be ok as long as you kept it close to the house.
