Spectator Sport Props

The recent talk of the Sea of Red and what not pushed me to create this thread.

We've seen all the props sports fans use during games: The two giant chopsticks the Angels used, the Terrible towels, what not.

I think there needs to be clarification aout who started what. if anyone has any info preceding what I know, then by all means, humble me.

1) The Wave: That started in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, and done perfectly, not spread out like I see here.

2) Giant Inflatable Chopsticks: Sorry Anaheim, Asian countires have used these for years at baseball and soccer games, particulalry Corea and Japan.

3) Terrible Towels: Pitt Steelers

Rats? I don't remember that.
Why did they throw rats?

Because I think John Van Beezbrook killed a rat in the locker room between periods one game and it somehow made it to the ice , and it gave them good luck or something. It was in 97.

I am sure towel power was started in Vancouver; I also heard the wave was invented here too (and not down in Mexico), but that could just be an urban myth. But unless Pittsburgh had the towels going in 81, that tradition belongs to Vancouver.

I meant the concept of a towel period, not a white towel speciffically. The Steelers were doing that in the 70s, the days of the Steel Curtain defense and Immaculate reception, and kicking Dallas ass in the supwer bowl. Besides, the Steelers towels are yellow.

I'll thank you for that too! The reason for the octopus was that you needed 8 games won to get the Cup back then. The legs of the octopus respresented the 8 games.
