Question Ok, I like meat...but......

anyone ever go through a straight up vegetarian stage? where normally, you eat meat like a champ, but then you get to thinking about it (or spend too much time preparing a chicken) and you're like, "never again".....when you think about it, as good as it is when it gets to your plate, what it goes through to get there in the first place, is oh-so-disturbing.

and mom and dad are making ribs for memorial day.

I know what you mean, but I love steak too much to totally give up on meat! However, I refuse to eat veal because the way the calves are raised is SO inhumane.

Yeah I do that. I'm debating becoming veggie. I'm not sure how long I'll last. I think reading Fast Food Nation was a big mistake.

I was a vegetarian for over 2 years. I got sick because I was missing a lot of the stuff I needed. I feel better then ever now that I am not doing that anymore. There's only so much fruit, veggies and cheese you can eat before you crave a nice big juicy steak. I ate a lot of carbs too being a veggie which I felt I gained weight on.

I go through phases where I eat little to no meat for a time. I just depends on what my body is craving at the time.

Sometimes I think about how meat is processed (I read Fast Food Nation and also did a speech about slaughterhouses for English) I gag. I also think it's gross to eat chicken legs. But sometimes I want them anyway. Ick eating meat off a dead animals bone.

You get alot of the essential amino acids, proteins and iron from eating portions of meat that is untainted. You need to know your "cuts"...

Such as avoid fatty meats or old meats. Supermarkets are notorius for selling poor quality meats unless you purchase your meats directly from the butcher.

I have been a "strict" vegetarian for over 8 years. The loss of protein from my diet caused me great suffering until I was on vitamin supplementation. I still have some dairy every not and then. But I do not eat fish. Only milk products and eggs. However, I get a funny look by folks insenstive to my eating needs... As if they haven't a clue as to what I eat...

This low carb craze: research is unclear as to what it truly does to folks bodies long term. If the changes in high fat and cholesterol are extremely damaging in the presence of absence of obesity. And there is a diabetic compenent mixed in with a cancer component.... Low carb diets helps folks lose weight. But that may affect folks baseline blood glucose and lipid levels which are not good for some people. Especially hypertensives and folks with heart problems...

The semester that I took gross anatomy, it was tough to eat meat of any kind. Most of my classmates also stopped eating meat, especially roast beef and corned beef. I got over it as soon as I didn't have to go to lab every day though.

I think different people have different body types and metabolisms and therefore respond differently to different types of diet. My dad (who has a chronic heart condition) went on Atkins a couple months ago. He has lost 11 pounds, his LDL cholesterol went down, his HDL cholesterol went up and his triglycerides are lower than they've ever been. His cardiologist was pleased and surprised and said that he will be anxious to see what future research shows in regards to this. This is what Atkins said would happen, but the jury is definitely still out and I know people who had a lot of kidney problems after following a low carb diet.

I agree, I think these super-extreme diets are way too risky... It is about moderation, IMO. Don't eat too many carbs, don't eat too many calories, don't eat too much meat. It is as simple as that. Keeping your body in any extreme state cannot be good.

DITTO!!

I do try to buy only organic meats and eggs. It just ain't natural for a chicken to eat dead chickens or cows or any other animal!! Also, I want to avoid the antibiotics that animals are fed. I'm allergic to penecillin and am afraid of building up a tolerance to those antibiotics I can take from consuming antibiotic-fed animals. It's a stretch, but that's where my crazy mind goes!

I have phases where I become veggie. It usually comes when I'm eating something and think, "OMG, I'm eating something dead." I've never understood how my mother grew up on a farm and *saw* her grandmother kill chickens and then turn around and eat it a few hours later. After reading Fast Food Nation I totally avoided any fast food for months.

I don't normally eat red meat. I will if mom cooks it but as far as restaurants go, I can't stand the fact that someone else is judging what is fully cooked and then expects me to eat it. (I trust that my own mother and family wouldn't serve me uncooked meat.)

I have been eating a lot of veggie burgers lately. I love them and they have lots of protein in them. This all started after I realized that the frozen Essentia burgers I bought at Albertsons had 31 (!YES THIRTY ONE!) grams of fat in them... per burger. They are sitting in my freezer now... I don't like throwing food out, but I ain't gonna eat "the heart attack on a plate."

But Trader Joes and Whole Foods Market have become my new best friends. I still love milk and will buy it anywhere, but I try to stick to organic meat (including lunchmeat.)

But I have always been a chicken and fish girl. Big ol' steaks were never my thing. This is why I always hated going to Black Angus with my family.

Before it was the Atkins diet it was the ketogenic diet and use for a long time. I honestly feel that most of the people that mock the diet are overweight. And by mocking I'm not saying they're unsure about it; I'm saying they will tell you it won't work, it's so unhealthy, blah blah blah while they sit there with their 40 inch wastes downing food like none other.

My out-laws were an odd bunch - half owned cattle, the others were Seventh Day Adventiists & vegetarians. I once asked my father-out-law the name of one of the steers, and he said, "Honey, you don't name dinner."

I go through phases of vegetarianism, too. As long as Morningstar Farms is around, I can handle it.

But I could never, ever be a vegan. I don't have the necessary moral imperative.

Actually, I honestly do feel that it's unhealthy... and I am not overweight.
