Brown Rice vs. White Rice

I've heard that brown rice is healthier. Why, and how much healthier?

I hate brown rice. The best rice in the world is white basmati rice from Iran or India and it has to be prepared well - often with butter.

The rice from asian countries is peasant rice.

I'll eat both..........I cant really taste a difference.

I think Brown rice is "natural" and white rice is "enriched" or something like that. I dont know enough about that really to really say anything.

Here's a nutritional profile for brown rice.

I'm a fan of wild rice, I'm not sure where that falls under.

Glycemic index. Supposedly Brown Rice doesn't cause the same level of insulin response that White Rice does.

Does it measure differently for carb counters (Atkins, etc.)?

Basmati rice for me too. It's a pain to prepare correctly, since you must wash it carefully, but it's ohhh so good. I think it also has a relatively low glycemic index for rice, but I'm too lazy to look that up. In terms of glycemic index, I believe wild rice is the lowest.

Depends on what plan you're on. For Atkins dieters, a carb is a carb. You have your carb limit for the day, and you stick to it. For other diets (South Beach?) there is a differentiation between low and high glycemic index foods, and lower is better.

What's yellow rice?

The Iraqi guy probably didn't show you the good stuff. There are crappy middle eastern restaurants that serve it and just make it like regular rice. They make it like Anglos for Anglos. There are greasy middle eastern restaurants that make it oily and buttery and that's just appealing to poor people. Then there are the really authentic places that make it and it's like an art. The rice is pristine. There is an amount of butter added in. A tiny portion of the rice has saffron to make it a beautiful color. The aroma is drawn out and you can smell something wonderful - great with aromas and tastes of mint and rose that are usually in other parts of the meal.

I love brown rice, basmati and arborio (rice for risottos).

I grew up eating brown rice.

I used to live near a Malaysian restaurant. Whenever I went there for dinner, I would have this warm pudding made with black sticky rice and coconut milk for dessert. It was delicious!
