Yes indeed, it is our official, national handsign.

Handsign

Something we may have been doing longer than the NPHC fraternities. Anyone know when somewhat consistent handsigns were used by the NPHC GLOs?

Interesting, learn something new every day!

And P.S. I DID do my research and looked on your national website before asking! (Very nice website by the way, I loved reading the story about the founding of the fraternity )

Another question:
Has APO been using a handsign from the beginning, or is it a more recent thing? (After reading some of the website, my guess would be from the beginning, but I wasn't sure).

If I'm asking anything that is not public domain, feel free to let me know.

Well it isn't used as often by chapters like Epsilon Mu at UMCP, because the idea of flashing a handsign is not that heavily used at Historically White Institutions.

I believe it goes all the way back, but I'll investigate. My National History book and 75th anniversary CD are at work right now.

Randy, it's time for you to get "Black Greek 101." The answer begins on page 123.

Hmm. You're right. Mid to late 1970s. I *know* that we have been using ours longer than that.
And the sororities, not until the mid 1980s.
(This actually came from an article about a talk the Author did at Nebraska. And as a coda to *just* how little clue they have out there on the topic. The article says the author and his father are both members of Alpha *KAPPA* Alpha Fraternity.

hijack:

EEK! For real!! I just looked over the article myself and,

"I've always wondered why there is such a separation between the multicultural greek system and the traditional greek system," she said, "and I want to know if there is any way we can bridge that gap."

How is one traditional when a number of NPHC orgs were founded before many other GLOs??

end hijack

Great pics! I can't get enough of seeing brotherly love!!!

This was actually the next day, the probate was a little too late in the evening for me.
