Inc.???

How do sororitys become an inc.?? I have seen alot of sororities go ABC inc. so explain that to me and why they are inc. instead of national???

Correct me if I'm wrong, but many HBGLO's sport the "Inc." as a symbol of independence, freedom, etc. As in the freedom, which was fairly new in the early 1900's when most formed, for blacks to form corporations. (apologies in advance if I butchered that aspect of HBGLO history).

If you want the "Inc." tag for your group, just file papers of incorporation.

BabyP, if you use the search engine, this has been discussed in the past on GC. Try using Inc. and a * in order to get it working.

I've seen threads about it... but not with any responses explaining the procedure (bar 'we've done this, I'll PM you; etc.)?

To clarify, her SECOND question I have seen discussed on here before

. It's to do with what ktsnake touched upon in his post (i.e. was not _possible_ for a black man or woman to incorporate a company back in the day, not possible due to laws outlawing it). But haven't seen her first question answered on here before.

Doesn't mean there aren't any; but I've not seen them before.

Slight bit of butchering there. There was a specific reason most BGLOs incorporated and while freedom would make it a nice story it's not exactly it. If after doing the search you still have questions please let the board know.

A lot of organizations are INC but don't necessarily have it in the name of their organization. Inc. also emphasizes the business aspect of our organizations.

Nope lol but good try. As Epitome stated part of it is because while we are social service sororities/fraternities, we also have business sides. Another part may not be on the boards at all and in which case that's better spent in a private dialogue.

ETA: Ok, he's Alpha Phi Omega and Beta Kappa Lambda. So, ktsnake, he couldn't help you with NPHC info if he wanted to.

is it possible it could be so that a regional becomes more "special" by being incorporated??? I noticed that regional greeks have the name INC. but I could be wrong. Please let me know

Maybe someone from a regional could let you know. But it isn't connected to the NPHC "inc"

We're regional (2 chapters) but we don't call ourselves Chi Delta Sorority Inc.

It was never brought up by our founders and it was never mentioned in our history/constitution.

But we seem to be doing okay without it.
