MOC Ideas
I am going to be MOC for our chapter this upcoming year and I am working out the new member events. What types of activities does your chapter do and what seems to be the most successful. In keeping accordancewith national and reflections, our chapter had some issues with new members respecting the chapter and ideals. I don't want to do any activities that could be considered hazing, but what works for you chapters.

I know our MOC is planning to play games with some of the info like our stone and badge description and stuff.. and NM have song practice at every meeting and do the reflections workbook questions. We also have Red Rose week the week before initiation. It usually includes serenade, sapphire sis appreciation..(the lil's plan an event for their bigs... usually take them to dinner) we also have a bonfire that week usually... and study night... and let's see sometimes our presents dance fall s during that week...

Ideas!!!
Oh yeah, I'm MOC this year too!!! I need massive amounts of ideas! Basically what I did with our sister that was just initiated COB on Sunday, was had weekly meetings with her and her sapphire sister. We'd just go over the readings, and I'd explain everything that she read the week before. That way not only did I get to help her learn, her sapphire sister got to know her too! It seemed to work out pretty well.
What we've done everytime since we were founded, was have a study session the night before (or as close to the night before) initiation, where all the sisters and new members go. We'll play ice breakers and do questions and answers. The new members get a chance to study one last time with the sisters, and the sisters can dust off their knowledge of Phi Sig.
But other than those, we really don't have any "fun" activities to do with our new members. Does anyone do the Rock Painting?? And if you do, can you explain to me what it is, and why you do it? (A sister advised me to do that, but I donno what exactly it is, or why....)

rock painting sounds a bit like brick painting. some of the fraternities do that. each new member gets a brick and they all paint it together. it is usually left in the chapter house and they paint different things representing what phi sig means to them and personal symbols. it is a cute idea that i forgot about. thanks for the ideas. i will keep you posted on any other ideas i have

Brick
One MOC a few years back started a new tradition for our chapter. Every new member class makes a brick, and we keep them in our chapter room in the pyramid form. She started with the girls that were still there, gave them bricks and had their classes make them. Now, each class gets their own and presents it with their plaque. I think its a nice tradition, and it joins all the new member classes together into one big formation...
I forgot..... the classes keep their brick a secret from the rest of the chapter..... its their turn to surprise us!

Cool!
We don't have a house... So maybe I'll do something like individual bricks for each new member. That way she can keep it. Or oh, what about if she gives it to her "big"??? Oh, that'd be so cute!
Ok, so do you all have New Member names, or anything like that? We're trying to get that started here... but it's kinda hard.
We have family mascots. My family is the cheetah family, cuz we're fast and furious! Cute huh? Basically every family at our chapter has something to do with animals or nature. Like clouds, stars, bees, etc. Do you have anything like that?
Any more ideas for MOC???

Hey there,
just want to let you know you should be careful about brick painting (depending on how you do it or use it). Phi Sig only allows a class to be known as Fall 2002, Spring 2001, etc. when I joined our chapter had a Brick ceremony. The bigs would paint a brick designating their lil (i was alpha lambda alpha) and they would give us the brick to add to the pyramid....well the Greek letter designation isn't allowed anymore (subtle form of hazing...separating the NM's from the actives)
also, nicknames are technically not allowed anymore either....we still do it though...last year everyone received Princess names....my year we were cartoons (I'm Casper)
I'm sorry if I seem so negative, I don't mean to be, I just don't want anyone to get in trouble if a consultant or advisor visits you and is a stickler for something like this.....
For MOC, you could have your sapphire sisters write the NM sunshine notes every week with interesting facts about the sorority( or themselves)
MOC is something my chapter also needs work on...

Definately needed to bring this one back to life... I know I asked in another thread, but I'm gonna ask again:
how does your chapter decide sapphire sisters?
Also, any ideas that your chapter has for NM events, I'd REALLY appreciate them!
Thanks!!!

We get our SS's the night of pinning, so usually the afternoon of pinning, the bigs and littles meet and talk, and then each person ranks who they want as their big/little.

Does your chapter have a "gift giving day?"
I donno what to really call it... I want our chapter a lil more organized, so that way the bigs can get their paddles, and the lils can get their chapter letters. I think that if we don't have a "mandatory" date set, then they'll never get around to giving them. (Like me... still haven't gotten my Twin or my lil their sweaters!!! But I did give my Twin her paddle...)
What do you suggest?

Here's how Sapphire Sister's went at my school (i say went bc I think they are altering a little bit of it this year...i an alum, so i don't know what they are doing)....
On the last day of recruitment, we invited all ladies interesting to a Sapphire Ball. Here, the sisters chatted with the potentials and got to know them for the last time (this event was mandatory to make sure all sisters had a chance to meet every potential). After the potentials leave, the sisters decide who gets in. All sisters who want to become a Sapphire Sister submit a form stating their top 3 choices of who they want to become their little. The next day, the potentials are given their bids and asked to come to the next meeting. The following week, (starting on Monday) the ladies who accepted their bids begin receiving presents. Clues are given about the big, but no one is to tell anyone who has who if they know. About a week or so later, at a meeting, the sisters create a maze with yarn for the PNM to follow. The ladies each start at one end of the yarn, and after unraveling it (trust me, it's hard cause it's looped around lamps, couches, and tables) the meet their big at the end! It is a lot of fun to watch and the ladies have so much fun finding out who their Big is! This evening is known as Sapphire Sister night (or formerly Big/Lil Night).
The evening before the PTM get initiated, we have something called Inspiritation Eve. This is a night to get the PTM excited about being initiated. Last fall, we went on a Hayride and to a Haunted house since Halloween was just around the corner. After all of this, the littles give their bigs paddles. The next morning, after initiation, the bigs give their little more presents, and this is usually the time when the New Members are given their first set of letters and a lavilier.
Please note, we are the only Greeks on campus, so we don't have to obide by many of the rules that others do. I have heard of "dirty rushing," and I have NO CLUE what that means or if these rules infringe upon it. But, I hope it's helpful to you and your chapter. Feel free to email me at Jadey28@yahoo.com if you need more assistance.

Ok, who likes the new name for MOC???
I absolutely love it!
Anyways, I have a question to this post... (Don't I always?)
Does your chapter give nicknames to the new members or initiated members?
(wanted to try something new at our chapter... so just wanna see what ya'll do.)
Also, going back to that sapphire sister selection process.... Do you have an application for both the n.m. and the "big"??? We have applications, but I wanna re-do them.
Anyways, thanks ahead of time for your answers... I honestly am getting so many ideas from your posts, it's so great! Keep 'em coming!

MOC Ideas
Wow You guys have a lot of really cute ideas that I would like to implement into my chapter! I think that idea of giving family mascots is adorable, I never thought of it. Usually you just hear about family numbers. Our chapter last year tried to re-new the tradition of giving nicknames but it didn't quite take. I'm hoping that this year we can give it another try. We were trying to hand out nicknames on the day of their initiation though. We figured by that time we knew the girls well enough to give them a nickname. Do any other chapters use something other that a Big Sis/Litte Sis application for pairing up the two girls? Because lately we've had some bad luck anticipating who will work well together and who won't. Other than that...keep the MOC ideas comin'
Love in the Pyramid,
"Grand Mastah" <~ my nickname stuck

at our chapter we (the new members) host a party for the chapter. the party has to have a theme. ours was a spring theme since we were the spring 2002 class. Anyway, we decorate the living room with all things associated with our theme and make name tags for each sister. (this is a good way of getting to know everyones nams) Plus food and refreshmants of course Anyway all the sisters who want to be bigs line up in front of all the NM's and we each take turns talking to one another. Then we all get pencils and papers and each girl (potential bigs and NM's) lists 3 people who she would want to be her big (3 people she would want to be her little) in order of your first choice , second choice, so on. After that all the actives go in a room away from us and they decide whose going to get what once they take a look at everyone's choices (you almost always get your first choice as long as the person you picked picked you as well). Then on the night of "Revelations" you find out who your big is by taking a piece of string she has put all around the house and you keep following it until it leads to your her! Mine lived at the house, so she spent a while putting that string everywhere and it took me FOREVER to get to her!

Thought I should bring this thread back to life... Since pretty much all of us are either in the New Member Periods... or almost there.
What are some new things that you're doing in your chapter this year, for the New Member Period?
