Cool Pre-pledge or post-rushee? What do ya'll think?

So I'm laying here staring at the ceiling and a question crossed my mind...

Lets say that a fraternity or sorority (may exclude some sororities since most do formal recruitment) extends a bid to a rushee (informal rush)... The rushee signs the bid, but does not start school under the next school semester.

What would this guy or girl who signed become?

Would you consider him/her a rushee still? a post-rushee? a pledge? a pre-pledge?

Is there already a name for this type of fellow?

What do you all think? I'm leaning towards maybe a cross between the rushee and the pledge... Possibly a plushee..

Hehe lemmie know what ya think..

Matt - I don't know that you want to be called a plushee...those are people who dress up in mascot type costumes and do the deed all dressed up...kinda freakish. One of my colleagues and my BF heard about these folks in their Psychology of Human Sexuality classes.

We refer to those people that have received a bid but have yet to pledge and become new members as bid members.

Here, you couldn't rush unless you were enrolled in school, so we didn't have that dilemma.

You laugh, but we had a fraternity that did this.

They would have fall (or spring) rush, and there would always be about 10 guys they would "red shirt" - they didn't officially extend a bid to them, but they would give these guys red shirts with the fraternity's letters on them. It was (very carefully) explained to them that they were NOT pledges, but if they came out for rush the following semester, they MIGHT get a bid. The red shirts were allowed at parties, but they had to do some of the grunt work the pledges never got to, such as bringing in more wood for the bonfire, or coming out to the house to clean up the next day, or dd'ing. It was like pledging, but not really getting any rewards. Each semester there was usually an "incident" where one or two of the red shirts got pissed because they weren't allowed into something that was "brothers only or "brothers and pledges only" but yet they had just spent 8 hours cleaning the house. I didn't understand 1-why the fraternity would do this, since they never had a quota limit as to how many pledges they could take, so why have red shirts to begin with, and 2-why would a guy do this? It's like the fraternity was taking complete advantage of the guy, 'cause even after all that "loyalty" he showed to the brothers, he still might not get a bid.

I'm pretty sure it's an NPC rule that you have to be a regularly matriculated full-time student to rush and receive a bid. (Otherwise we'd be snapping up high school seniors )

But you could have a situation where someone receives and accepts a COB in, say, November, but doesn't begin the actual new member process until the next semester. These people would be biddees. Even during formal recruitment, we'd refer to our new members as biddees until they were ribboned.

I'm confused by the whole red shirt thing... people actually chose to do this? Sounds like hazing, even though I guess it technically wouldn't be since they're not pledges...

Red Shirt

I"m laughing because I'm a Star Trek fan and a "Red Shirt" has a completely different connotation. It's the no-name-given character that gets killed off early in an episode.

they also had a CSI episode on it... now back your regularly scheduled thread.

And I wanted to add that you can't go thru rush unless you are enrolled at Sac State... whether for informal or formal... at least for us.

I know I have heard about fraternities giving members bids who weren't enrolled in school yet but we saw them all the time at events and it seemed like they were a new member forever.

Sounds like you're describing me... You kind of have to start early. Theres 27ish fraternities on campus and if you wait until summer or a week or two before classes start when most people rush, you won't really get to see what the fraternity is really like... And if you do, you won't be able to see many of em..

Once I found a certain one that really clicked with me, I was like you described... at all the events... I rushed that fraternity for about ummm 6-7 months on and off believe it or not until I signed a bid.. I definately got to see what the guys were like and after that there was no doubt that i'd fit in fine..

Plus fraternities around here like to start early... get em while they're young

yupp

You'd be the same as my brother's, friend's, uncle's, father's, cousin's roomate as far as your relationship to this group is probably concerned -- absolutely nothing.

I disagree. Your brother's friend's uncle's father's cousin's roommate has not signed with this fraternity.

After your fraternity extends a bid to someone, do you also view them as of no significance to you or your fraternity? I truly hope not. That person will most likely become your brother. After all, you chose him.

I'm assuming that you are saying that you don't know of any term which describes someone who is signed a house but has not started school yet...

Thanks!

-Matt
