Lightbulb Need ideas

So, my recruitment director and I (I'm assistant) are trying to come up w/a different theme for our Info Night during Formal recruitment. Tracy Martin (National Recruitment Director) told us it is time for us to change our orginal theme to something new but we are completly lost. We thought maybe going along the lines of doing Anchored for Life as the theme. We want our Info Night for formal to be sorta formal (black dress pants) because in the past it wasn't and we would always wear jeans and letters. So if you guys have any ideas....I'd love to hear em

I'm the Recruitment director and we've already started coming up with ideas for next year. We have Sorority Tea, an info nite to learn about all 3 NPC sororities on our campus, and this fall, we are going to use the poem "Portrait of a Tau" and kind of act out all the things it says. If you've never read it, you can find a copy of it on our chapter website at www.geocities.com/astuic Hope that this idea helps!

Something that happened to us w/Portrait of a Tau is that the faculty objected. We had it on flyers that were all over campus and the line about cutting a two-hour lab offended some people because it is not academically minded. I just wanted to mention it to you, cause that part isn't the best rush mentality.

Hmmmm....I can see why faculty objected to that line...most of the time they almost have to or risk looking like they condone skipping class (especially if the overall university admin. is strict). Or maybe they're just being entirely too uptight about the whole thing. I'm sure they have students that have skipped class before. Anyway.....

I think the poem really speaks to students....it's kinda like saying "Taus have standards to uphold, but they're not tightwads about it". I guess one way around the faculty objection (who knew they read those flyers anyway!!!) is to have portions of the poem printed onto flyers...different flyers with different parts of the poem...and then invite people to learn more about what a Tau is. Just leave out the lines faculty might throw a fit about, but during the recruitment event read or display the entire poem. Make the "cutting a two hour lab" line kinda an inside joke, so to speak. (One way I would do it is to read the line, then when you say "cutting a two hour lab", give a conspiratorial (sp?) look and go "shhhh...don't tell!" Maybe you just have to see it...)

Now that I go back and read that, it doesn't make as much sense as if I'm explaining it out loud. I hope you understand it!!!

About making info night more formal, what about wearing black pants with an embroidered top? Something a little nicer than a Tshirt...but not too expensive. Then either find a mom with one of those embroidery sewing machines (don't remember what they're called) or find someone to embroider either small letters or Alpha Sigma Tau spelled out, or an anchor, something like that. You can use those year after year as a "chapter shirt" for pictures or certain campus events where jeans/block letters are too casual.

When I rushed in fall of 2002, our girls did an AST fashion show, where they each had a shirt with the different Tau Activities. Someone would read a description of the activity while the girl would take her turn on the "catwalk." I thought it was cute, this year we did something similar, but with sashes (a la Girl Scouts), with the activities. The best part is, you can make it as formal or informal as you want!

That was our old theme....well Paris and we did the cat walk. Worked for my class but not last year and PNM's said it was boring...so time to change it up.
