Who's a Hall of Famer?!
Nope...this ain't a sports thread
I'm sitting here watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Presentation.
Since much has been made of the lack of quality and muscianship of today's artists, I'm gonna ask this question...
Which of today's artists (R&B, Rap, Pop or Rock) would most likely make it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Here's some of my guesses! (I'm sure I can think of more later)
Alicia Keys
LL Cool J
Run DMC (due to their status as some of the Founder's of Rap)
India Arie
Jill Scott (If she would quit playing and GET BACK TO THE STUDIO PRONTO)
R. Kelly (As much as it pains me to say it, he is bordering on musical genius-I think he is the Marvin Gaye of this generation)
Missy Elliot
Sheryl Crow
Norah Jones
Mary J. Blige
OutKast

Hey Virtual,
I'm sending you a card soon hee hee. But umm back to the thread.
I think most of your list will make it in easy because they have proven to be talented in a number of different ways. I think Alicia, India and Norah would have the most problems really. They are each gifted, even though I really only get into India, in a way that is great but I don't know if they have the longevity needed to be considered a Hall of Famer. I don't think I could look back 25 years from now, based on what they have put out up to this point, and say yeah that's Hall of Fame worthy. I am hoping, especially for Alicia and India, that they prove me wrong but right now not so much. The rest of the list should be shoe ins when they hit their eligibility point. I'm not sure if they'd ever consider hard core esque rap to be Hall of Fame worthy but Tupac would go on my list if they did, Biggie too because they both seemed to make rap take over the popular culture in ways their predecessors hadn't.

Yes I did forget about Biggie and Tupac. We can assume their music will endure the test of time.

As long as too many more post mortem releases aren't made public I think their legacy to date should be safe. The subpar releases after Tupac's death may have hurt the issue but the material he release prior to his death was very powerful in a strange way. The whole California Love to Keep Your Head Up conflict kept him on my radar for some reason.

I will be hurt if Tony Toni Tone (jointly and severally) don't get in!
I think Erykah Badu may also have a shot.

Miss Jill just had herself a baby. Hopefully, she'll get back in the studio within a few months.

what about TLC? only female group that stayed together.
is mariah in the hall of fame? i would consider her for a minute.
i really want to refrain from putting jay-z up for a nomination, but if r kelly is worthy (speaking strictly musicwise), then jay has to go up there. i mean he had 2 #1 albums in less than a year (perhaps that was due to him just crankin out mediocre records for the hell of it, but still, impressive).
and i think LL is already in the hall of fame.
is will smith in there?

I thought she was just starting a charity, named Bouncing Babe or something, not actually having just delivered a child. Unless I misread that article.

you can't get into the hall of fame unless it's been 25 years since your FIRST release so neither LL or will is in there, neither is mariah

True, also I believe the Hall looks for LONGEVITY over the 25 year span....so I'm hesitant to name some of our dear departed artists (Aaliyah, TLC with Left-Eye, etc) unless their music ENDURES over the 25 year span and it become the INFLUENCE for newer artists.
(ala Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, etc)

Yep and while the music was cool I can't see No Scrubs as having a lasting influential effect on the music of future generations. That's probably why I dropped Salt N Pepa from my radar as well. They were cool too but Whatta Man and Let's Talk About Sex don't make me think of Hall of Fame.

You're right. I got that info from my sister who is notorious for reporting half of the facts. My fault for not verifying the info.

Honestly, I don't think many of the groups/artists people have listed will make it into the R&R Hall of Fame. If it was a specialized one from Soul Train or Vibe maybe but the main one??
Prince made it in his first time eligible but he's a musical genius . They may not accept him but they can't knock his talent.
The Dells made it this year - but it was their 4 or 5th time being nominated. I was surprised during their acceptance speech when he listed groups that have not been inducted/nominated yet - (The O'Jays & The Stylistics)...if these groups that still sellout concerts and have reunion tours 30 years later are having trouble getting votes I don't think too many of today's artists will ever be considered.
However, my short list of future nominees includes:
Babyface
Barry White
Celine Dion
Janet Jackson (if she stays out of trouble)
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (producers)
Lionel Richie
Mariah Carey (*would have to put out a few more albums)
Outkast (if they stay together)
Patti LaBelle
Whitney Houston (*see JJ)
And if they go there then I'd have to include Dr Dre and Ed Lover for hosting Yo MTV Raps...because of them this cross over stuff happened
Here's the link to see who's already been inducted Hall of Fame Inductees

I have to agree with you about "The Purple One". They can say what they want about him.....he's proven he's bad!! Besides, look at how many artists have to wait years before they get in. He got in on his first try.
