Cool Ebay Buys

I've got a question for all of you....now, before you assume this goes into the Chit Chat board, hear me out.....

Ebay is a great tool and you can buy many great things (both GLO and non-GLO) for relatively low prices...I've gotten some really great DG buys on there and have seen some pretty amazing auctions (for example the DG badge from 1892 that went for $2,289.82...the badge was incredible and without Ebay, we would have never even known it existed) but there's something that has bothered me for a bit now, but it directly relates to me now.

There are many mixer and greek week shirts that go up on Ebay all the time. How do you feel about your letters being out there like that? I mean, I don't really have a problem if DG's at some random chapter have an event with our letters on it and people wear the shirts they recieved as being an event participant. It's pr for us :-D (Granted if they were wearing it and doing stupid stuff, another story) However, I know it's a bigger deal as far as Fraternities go. From what I understand for a Fraternities letters to be on something is a big deal, esp if they aren't brothers.

My situation: I am GREAT friends with one of the local Sig Ep chapters (but we never do joint events with them and have t-shirts) and I was on ebay and I found a Sig Ep/DG shirt from a mixer a couple of years back. I think that the Sig Ep men here are great (and my chapter is really tight with them) and I would love nothing more than to wear a shirt supporting not only my Sigma Phi Epsilon friends but the relationship between our two organizations. On the front breast pocket area there are both sets of letters and on the back it says Sig Ep and Delta Gamma: Western Mixer. I bid on it because the auction is about over and I think it's a great shirt, however, the more I think about it, the more concerned I get. What is the general feelings on shirts like this? Should I go to the chapter and ask for permission to wear it? I would never do anything to ruin the reputation of my boys here and they know that, esp if I'm wearing a shirt with their org on it, but I still don't know. I don't really know what to do....and I'm curious on your all's personal viewpoints.

Thanks!

Mandie-

When the shirt was being designed, both DG and Sig Ep gave permission for their letters to be on the shirt. Therefore, if you are a DG or a Sig Ep, you can wear the shirt. I don't see why or how the chapter of Sig Ep at your school would have a problem with it.

Yeah, and I considered that, its just that THESE guys didn't give their permission, and I didn't know if that was a big deal among guys....like I said earlier, with me and my sisters, if another sister thought it was ok to put our letters on a shirt and give it to someone, I'm cool with that, I trust their judgement, but I know with guys it's a bigger deal (someone wearing their letters) and I didn't know if that applied to this type of stuff too....

:laughs: my instinct is that these guys would love it, but I just wanted to kind of feel out the general male opinion

My chapter sells surplus shirts on ebay. It's actually a pretty decent way to liquidate assets that are just taking up space. I used to handle correspondance with buyers. I've never had a buyer that wasn't another Sigma Nu (or claimed to be).

I have a few all-Greek shirts from other schools from swaps with other chapters and whatnot - and since I now attend a school without my sorority, I'll sometimes wear those instead of letters when I feel like showing spirit. Like the above poster said, your letters are on it too, so you can wear it.

You never know where your letters may show up. I was at a thrift shop a couple of months ago whose clientele includes a large immigrant population. I saw a 10-year-old boy wearing a Kappa Alpha Theta (Greek letters) sweatshirt. I was probably the only person in the store who knew what the letters represented.
