Okay, I saw it last night. I think the book, as usual, was better. It was fitting for HBO. Wesley was believable as Franklin.
Overall, it was okay, aight! It wasn't the BOMB BABY!

BUT, THAT SCENE AT THE REFRIGERATOR! OH MY GOODNESS! WHEW! (FLASHBACK!)

I am interested in knowing what you all thought of it...

Now, I can call the cable folks and tell them I no longer want HBO!

Who mentioned the soundtrack on another thread? I heard Angie Stone, Chaka Khan, Common, Donnie Hathaway...I hope ALL of those songs are on the soundtrack!

I watched it with my girlfriend and she was more into it than I was. I can't really say I was all too fond of it. Maybe it was the editing job. *lol*

When they make "Mama" into a movie...call me.

I agree with you is was aiight. Wesley did end up being ok as Franklin. I wish I had re-read the book before the movie, there were a few things I could not remember.

And oh yes that frige seen had me going "DAMN!!"

I liked the movie! Before sitting to watch it, I was wondering how Wesley would do as Franklin...I think he did an okay job. I think Sanaa Lathan did a good job too...she really did put on some weight for the part!!

Question for all: The girl that was Zora's friend in the movie...not the one who's house she went to...but the other one, she played her sister in Love and Basketball...is it just me, or did she have a 'less than perfect' weave??? I wasn't all up in the television, but I did notice where her hair started, and ended....especially after that baby was born!!!

But um, yeah...I have to admit, that fridge scene was like....damn.

I'm have to agree with the masses on this one. The movie was O. K.

The most believeable scene was the part when she just couldn't have sex with him anymore. At that point, the reality of the situation outweighed the desire to make love. (we have all been there at some point, and if you haven't, it's coming)

She was also very convincing in the scene at the window, where she was crying. I just couldn't figure out if she was crying because she really loved him and missed him, or was she crying because of the fact that she
had sacrificed so much ( having a baby, and her music carrer) and she regreted it?

All in all, it was cool because I'll watch anything with a bunch of black people staring in it, good or bad (well, maybe not "homeboys from outer space"...I just couldn't do it.)

Can I say 'Hated it' without offending any … - hope so because I think I am about to spoil all the fun …. I totally did not like the movie. I liked the scenery and the actors as individuals, but as one cast I don't think it was all that. I said I would read the book before the movie but I got caught up in other stuff, so I can't really compare it but I could have swore Zora had way more seizures then the only 'one' they showed. And though Wesley and Sanaa are great actors they did not have the chemistry I expected; 2gether they just did not make the cut. I thought Zora looked to young and Franklin too old. I did enjoy seeing them play scrabble and fall in love initially and I did love the refrigerator scene, but the way they got into it was so fake, maybe if Franklin was say Morris Chestnut (taller than Wesley, and more buff then Wesley, and younger than Wesley) maybe then I would have been more into it. Well, that's just my opinion... I am still going to try and reread the book and see where the movie deviated …those that can do the comparisons please chime in

Please start with Zora's age, her profession and why she was moving to Brooklyn. thanks!

Added: I want this info from the books perspective.

Skee, I thought that it was not immediate where Zora met Franklin and they hit it off.

You know, I was waiting to see if Zora would have MORE seizures. All that stress she was under, I just knew that she was going to, BUT, SHE DIDN'T.

I pulled the book from my closet. You know I will be rereading it. I maybe MORE disappointed AFTER I have reread it.

But, I did find some of the words that the characters used in the book, were the SAME as it was in the movie.

Am I the only one who loved it???? Maybe its because I hadn't read the book. I am not a fan of Terry McMillan. I hope I don't offend anyone, but her novels, to me, fall under the pop fiction category...She doesn't compare to Toni Morrison or Alice Walker. So, since I haven't read it, I was very pleased with the movie, and Wesley's butt!!

You CANNOT compare Terry to Toni or vice versa. That's just like comparing Yolanda Adams to Jennifer Lopez...you just CANNOT do it. It's not possible!

Toni does her kind of writing, Terri does hers. I find Terri very entertaining. I don't expect her to win a nobel peace prize or to become a POET LAUREATE for Waiting to Exhale or any of her books, SO FAR!

Yet, Terri should be respected in her own right as an author!

After rushing to read the book again last week prior to it coming on HBO, I'd have to say that it was below average.

For me, the greatest part of the book was the pure romance/chemistry between the two. I felt that Wesley was too old for the part.**Plus after his negative comments about sistas, I'm not feeling him AT ALL. I think Machai (?sp) Phifer or even Omar Epps would have been a better choice. Realistically, Wesley produced it so throw that thought out the window! I digress, I truly feel that there wasn't enough chemistry coming from him. You could see it in her, but Wesley left me with the silent sound of crickets.

To answer a couple questions, Zora only had one seizure in the book. It came the evening AFTER she met his dysfunctional parents. By the way, I'm totally missing the potatos moms threw in Zora's face. She moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn to save money for her music career. Anyway, loved the book! Disappointed in the movie. But that's not surprising.

After watching the movie, I thought there could have been more. I think it suffered from a problem which most books to movies suffer from.......lack of detail. I think the movie was OK the characters were pretty good. Besides the Fridge Scene

the rest of the movie moved kinda slow until they started confronting problems and that made the movie more real to me.

jazbri Machai (?sp) Phifer would have been a good character also. You stated that she only had one seizure in the book - for real? I can't wait till I reread it. Music career? was she going to be a singer in the book? Can yall tell I read this when I was like 10, dang

I never read the book - so I really didn't know what the movie was about or have anything to compare it to. I am not a great fan of Wesley Snipes (after some remarks he made about Black women in an Ebony interview)...but my husband and I watched it anyway. My husband and I were laying in bed PLAYING SCRABBLE - when the scene came on and they were playing scrabble we almost fell off the bed laughing. I thought the movie was ok...it wasn't great but it was a good story line.

Soror AKA2D, I'm feeling you on the refrigerator scene. I was like "Whoa!" The book, of course, I thought was much better, but they did a decent job. I think Wesley and Sanaa both did a great job. To a person who has read the book, the events in the movie seemed to move to fast, or at least I thought so. They didn't focus on her illness, his employment problems, or their relationship problems for that matter. Overall, it was aight.
