Can you join a sorority in sophomore year?

Hi there, I've just been accepted at NYU and will be spending my first year on the NYU campus in Florence, Italy and will transfer to the New York City campus at the start of my second year. At this point will it be too late to join a sorority at NYU?

Take care

Jennifer-Christie

I doubt it, especially if you're a transfer student. I rushed as a sophomore, and I even have a couple of juniors in my pledge class too.

I rused as a junior (although the term isn't used here, or not all that often). I think it really all depends on the school. But it never hurt anyone to try.

I did it. My school was slightly competitive, too, depending on the houses you wanted.

yes you can. but it depends a lot on the individual chapters and when you rush. it's harder for a non-freshman to get a bid during formal recruitment - the chapters at this time want to give bids to those with the most time to beneift them. but we had sophomores and juniors go through formal recruitment and get bids. if there is cob'ing for a chapter you're interested in, that would be a better option in my opinion.

rush as an upperclassman

The key here is where you are in school, not what experiences people have had at other schools, because it differs. Contact the Greek Life office at NYU. I am sure they can tell you whether the sororities routinely offer bids to non-freshman women. Typically, in places where rush is not as competitive, it doesn't matter as much what your classification is.

if NYU is like other Northern schools (and I suspect it is, I never hear much about them, unlike Cornell which I know has a big Greek system) then it shouldn't be a problem. At Rutgers (where the people are probably fairly similiar to the types of people who go to NYU, except we're poorer and mostly all from jersey), it wasnt a problem to go through as a Sophomore at all, at any house. Some houses were weary about Juniors, but not Sophomores.

*edited because I have the worst grammar for a law student....*

Yes definitely!

NYU is home to our Alpha chapter here in New York City. The school does not do a true panhellenic recruitment like many of you do so there is no "stigma" of a soph going through. There are 2 nationals (it used to be aephi but I think is now ASA or AST?) and several local sororities (only on that campus, not national or international). There are many girls who join as sophomores. Check out all the groups and find the one that is home for you!
