texas*princess, I don't consider myself a fashionista, but here's my 2¢

If you're going with a date, find out if he's wearing a suit or a tux. From there, wear something in which you feel elegant and sophisticated- this differs from person to person, but the infamous "little black dress" with pearls would be perfect. Obviously, you won't need to dance in it, but make sure you'll be comfortable sitting in it, without worrying about a ton of wrinkles.

Enjoy!!!

i'm with achtung, something black. i'd even go so far as to say a long black dress. no pants at all.
don't overdo it though. i always laugh at those girls who go overboard when they go to the theatre or symphony. (yes, i do go to the theatre regularly) also, if it's a matinee show, you don't have to go for the long dress. a short cocktail dress is fine.

key thing to remember: K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple Sister

I second all the "classy black dress" suggestions. This is a good time to make an investment in this wardrobe staple. You will get lots of use out of it - this type of dress can be worn again and again, with lots of different looks by changing accessories.

For the love of life, DO NOT be one of those girls who shows up in some overpriced trendy dress in some outrageously bright color. It's a classy event so look classy.

Basically, if Carrie Bradshaw would wear it, Just Say No!

You are close to Dallas. Get over to Terry Costa (Victor's ex-wife)! The most fabulous dresses for next to nothing, not just bridal. SW corner of Preston at LBJ. You should shop here at least once a month just for fun!

You're welcome!! Such a FUN place to shop. They won't let you play with the bridal gowns though, so don't even try

I'm a music major. Having attended many such events, I have seen people wearing things that are TOTALLY inappropriate and it just pisses me off.

My suggestion: an ultra classy black dress. Nothing glitzy or flashy. Find one that is not low cut and NOT above the knee. I suggest cocktail length or even ankle length. A dress like this will get use in lots of situations, so it's not like you'd be splurging on something you'll never wear again.
