meeting times
When are your meetings?
Have they always been at this time? Do you change it every semester?
How on earth do you work around the schedules of so many girls (since I know that a lot of you have huge chapters)??

We hold them at 7:00 pm on Sunday nights. If you miss 3 you get a standards meeting and possibly a fine... Some sisters want them changed to Monday at 8:30, and we're currently looking into the possiblity, but I'm not a big fan of it.

Epsilon Xi Chapter has had them all over the place. We out grew having them in the chapter room, so we have them in the conference rooms downstairs in the all greek hall. Because of this it is just a sign up for a day situation. So in turn we tell women the semester before when the meetings the next semester will be. In turn you try to work your schedule around them. If you cannot work classes around them then you must make sure that Standards has a copy of your schedule so they know for sure that is where you are. Because it has been known from the previous semester, work is not an excuse.

When I was in school, everyone had their meetings on Monday night - silence reigned in the sorority dorm from 6pm on! The only way out was to present your class schedule with a Monday night class, showing a course that was mandatory and that was the only time you could take it. Three unexcused absences meant no voice/no vote for the rest of the term, and a Standards Hearing.
Now, the meetings all seem to be on Sunday night - but I'm not sure when the change occurred.
ETA: work wasn't an excuse for us, either, unless your supervisor called the Chapter President with an emergency. I think it happened once.
Also, one term, our President had a Monday night class, so we had to switch to Tuesday night. There was much grumbling from those who had turned down Monday night classes to schedule them on Tuesday...

Our chapter meetings were always on Sunday nights...where we wouldn't have problems with classes interfering. The times changed slightly (usually from 6 to 6:30 and back to 6), but everyone was told ahead of time to plan for a block of time from 6 to 8 (or 6:30 to 8:30) for chapter meetings....our meetings usually didn't run that long, but sometimes we'd need the extra time to discuss different matters of the chapter.
We didn't *always* accept work as an excuse, but for many of our sisters they had to work in order to pay dues and everything, so it was hard to say that work was not an excuse for missing chapter meetings

When I was at U of A our chapter meetings, along with every sorority on campus, where on Monday nights. I believe they still are. I had to be at the house by 5:30 for dinner and chapter started roughly at about 7.
When I transferred to ASU, i chose not to affiliate, but from meeting sisters on the campus I learned that they too had chapter on Monday nights. I'm pretty sure all the sororities at ASU hold chapter on Monday night. Anyways, their chapters start at around 7pm (they don't have houses) and chapters are held on campus. Either the MU or a big lecture hall that has been booked for the semester for that particular chapter.
As for classes, actives knew that they had the responsibility of attending chapter. I'm sure though if you had a particular class to take at it was on Monday nights accomadations could be made.
A sister from U of A had class on Monday nights and was always late to dinner. We had a thing where if we were late we would go up to our house mom and apologize and then apologize to the chapter for your tardiness. I don't believe that sister had to apologize to the chapter every time because it was a class conflict.
I'm sure things have changed because I haven't been to a chapter meeting since 98.

Our chapter meetings were and i think still are like Honeychile's. Monday night at 6:30pm. All sorority and fraturnity meetings are at that time. The only time it was changed was if there was a conflict with a school function or a holiday. Then for that week it was Tuesday night. It was understood athat you didn't take class on Monday night, unless it was unavoidable.
Correct me if I'm wrong texas*princess, since you are an active.

well, I'm quite impressed. we have 17 girls, and coming up with a time when we can all meet is like... i don't know. think of something really REEEEEEEEALLY difficult, and it's that (it's 1 a.m. -- my brain is dead). nobody's willing to give in at all, and it's really frustrating. we're trying to avoid the sunday night thing because our EVP/treasurer works every other sunday, and most of us just really didn't like the sunday thing when we tried it last semester. somebody has a night class every night, and nobody wants to miss meetings - we're so small that almost everybody has an important position (ha, see my other recent thread...), so they have to be there. it just really shouldn't be as difficult as it is to find a good meeting time!

You're right Sherra!!!
Most all of us are able to attend the meetings, except for the few who have to attend Monday evening class, but that time has always worked well for us. (which is good considering our chapter is around 70 right now!)
The only problem that I can think of is when there is a holiday that we have Monday off school, and we have to have our meeting that Tuesday... all sorts of things come up like sisters who have Tuesday evening class, or people with set work schedules that can't change.

I think my chapter's meetings were Mondays, but the chapter I advise had them at 9:30PM Monday nights! I may be getting old, but I think that is TOO late! Especially for advisors!! There are many women in the chapter on the cheerleading squad, and practices were scheduled to END at 9:30 Mondays this semester, so the chapter voted to have them on Sunday evenings, at 6PM (I think!). The reason that chapter had such late meetings is that there are a lot of classes that go so late. (Recruitment parties START at 9:30PM for this reason, too!)

wow... I don't think I could function if our meetings *started* at 9:30! That's really not late compared to when I usually end up going to bed, but I can't sit in something like that without falling asleep after 9! We finally settled on 8:30 Monday nights for ours, and by the time we usually finish, I'm just drained from the day.
