Sorors, I need ideas, HELP!!! (SF's too)
Soror Moderators I did perform a search before I wrote this topic......
My chapter (undergrad) is in the middle of planning programs/fund-raisers for the Fall. We of course will be including some of our chapter traditions, but we would like to include and start new, improved and exciting ones. I am interested in learning about some of the most interesting programs, fund-raisers or activities as SF you have attended that drew you even closer to our beloved sorority? To the SF's, what are some programs that you have attended in the past that left you in awe about Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Please post or feel free to email me @NRGRZRBUNY@AOL.COM

One of the best programs I have ever attended was "Black Women in the Media". It was quite an eye opening experience. The chapter had a professor come in, who had done extensive research on the subject and showed how black women are often portrayed as animals or sexually depraved. Think Stronge'(Grace Jones) in Boomerang. I had never thought of US that way until I went to the program.

a friend of mine was telling me that her school's chapter of aka has what they call the "mr. pink and green pageant," that is similar to the alpha's "ms. black and gold pageant," but not as formal. and, after the pageant, the participants are auctioned off. she told me that people were paying $100+ for dudes!
also, there was the AKApollo night. i think they made their money in entry fees. the thing about that was the interested girls participated A LOT so it was kind of a catch-22: those that participated were looked at favorably by the chapter members but, everyone in attendance knew who they were.
but anyway...those are just some ideas that i have heard of

The chapter on my campus does "Mr. Pink & Green" too. It is indeed kind of informal, but it was fun. The program I went to that struck me the most was a Cultural Exhibition the chapter held during their week in the fall. I attend a VERY predominantly white university, and it's not often that minorities are heavily represented on campus. Different minority organizations on campus made presentations in about a million different ways, but it was just a nicely put-together program that was not only educational, but a reminder that we are on campus SOMEWHERE!
