Under his platform, "The Formula: A Systemic Perspective on Student Leadership," undergraduate trustee candidate Chequan Lewis intends to engage the general student body in a dialogue that directly addresses their needs and concerns.
Lewis, who is a junior political science and economics double major, wants to offer students the opportunity to play a significant role in the decision-making process of the Board of Trustees.
His platform rests on four main pillars: enlightenment, community, interaction and empowerment. He seeks to increase the level of student participation in student government by giving them a chance to voice their ideas to him through an open-door policy. Lewis would like to build a closer relationship between Howard and the Washington, D.C. area.
"I want to relate the campus to the community and the community to the campus," he said. "By connecting with the community, Howard is always relevant, not just to us. That is the purpose of higher education."
Lewis currently serves as Mr. Howard University, and this position, he says, has given him a chance to network with many of the officials that he would work with as undergraduate trustee. His other leadership positions include Executive Chief of Staff for the College of Arts and Sciences for the last two years and president of the Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
"When you put the power in the students' hands, they are doing those things that directly affect them. I have a genuine passion and vision for the University and for the position, and I am doing this from my heart," Lewis explained.
