Who is deaf on this??

I was wondering is there any Deaf greek on this Greekchat web?? I wonder why I know a few Deaf Greek on a deaf forum but not here..........

I'm partially hard-of-hearing (almost completely deaf in my left ear).

It doesn't interfere much with my daily life, though - most people that I don't tell outright think I'm 100% hearing. I lipread well enough to make up for most of what I miss.

I'm almost completely deaf in my left ear, but my right ear makes up for it by working twice as hard.

I don't tell many people this because i am very self concious about it , but i lost my hearing for one complete summer growing up because i have been palgued by severe ear infections my entire life. I have run the gamut of tubes etc... and from that summer i have a loss of hearing. Though i can hear and understand completely and do read lips i do have some loss. i can even sign because i was fasnicated by this and thought maybe if this got any worse i better learn now, So when ppl say i am talking to loud and i cannot even detect it i get very quiet because from that stems my self conciousness.

Sad part is my 4 yr old son is being plagued by severe ear infections like i had.

flip side was growing up when my mom was calling me or yelling at me , which ever came first...ha, i would say sorry i cant hear ya ...or was it selective hearing.

I don't even try to pretend that I'm hard of hearing, but if there are a lot of loud noises around I have a hard time hearing conversations with people infront of me.

Sometimes I think I"m losing my hearing in my right ear. I have to put the volume on my phone way high on that ear, but then I switch to my left and it's so freakin high.

A friend of mine in high school was partially deaf cuz her next door neighbor used to scream in her ear when she was little. She had to learn to read people's lips.

And my niece has had surgery on her ear so many times with the tubes. She's only 2 1/2 but her hearing seems to be fine.

Oh, I should mention about myself, whoops

I am born profound deaf in both ears. I am oral that means I talk. I do know ASL but I am more Oral....in other words you cant shut me up

What do you mean by a common sign form in the context of ASL and BSL each being understood by people usin the opposite language? Do you mean a few words are the same or the gist is understood? And ASL being close to French (LSF) is that in the way of how many hand movements used to convey words etc? I had thought about learning BSL in the past and thought it a shame if it wasn't compatible with ASL.

Sign languages are not all the same. In some cases the sign languages for countries that share a spoken and written language are completely different. British Sign Language (BSL), the sign language that is used by deaf people in the UK, is quite different to American Sign Language (ASL) and the fingerspelling is completely different - only the letter C is the same in both BSL and ASL. BSL uses two hands for all letters apart from C, whereas all ASL letters are signed one handed.

eta: This link, apparently there is wide variation and each (ASL/BSL) is understood in different areas.

There is a sign language called International Sign Language which claims to be equivalent to esperanto... in other words, a combination of all languages to make one, universally understandable language

From what I've heard, ISL is significantly different from ASL. ASL is much more highly used in this country.

I have the same problem as hootie. I've lost the ability to discriminate sounds. I was in bands for several years and the amps took their toll.

Hubby has loss in both ears-nerve damage-it runs in his family.
He is a successful professional and the only effect I think it might have had was that feeling of being different and of course the
obnoxious people who will make a joke and think it's so funny...all in jest.

Some people look at anything "different" as a weakness, and that is something he acknowledges and carries with him. Yet, I also think some people believe it makes him more sensitive and better in his field!

He did say one time that the most comfortable he ever felt his entire life was in Kansas...but then everyone around us suffered from tractor ear! TRUE!

I did want to add that my brother-in-law who has the most damage is thinking about an implant. Is that an option for you?

I have a small amount of hearing loss. Normal conversation or watching tv is fine but trying to talk to someone in a crowd is a problem. Rush was a nightmare for me.

LOL - I am sorry, you guys think you have it hard......... anyways... as for the earlier comments. ASL is AMERICAN sign language, language is different all over the world. Mexico have their own sign language, as well as all the countries. The reason why LSF has some similarity with ASL is because the origins of ASL is from LSF. They brought it over when they set up schools for the Deaf here in USA. If you want to learn about Deaf History you can ask me or i can recommend some great books
