Any Sociology majors?
What the hell do you do with a Sociology degree? I've been out of college since 2000 and the two jobs that I've had have sucked! I've been unemployed since the end of October and now I have to seriously start looking for a new job...

I graduated with a degree in Sociology. My concentration was in Criminology & Criminal Justice. I thought that I wanted to go into Federal law enforcement. However, after completing an internship with a Federal law enforcement agency I realized that it was NOT for me. I decided to go back to school for an MBA. I spoke with my career services office and asked how I could use my soc. degree to better my career in the business sense and they said that it could be seen as me having really good people skills.
Many of the other people that I know with Soc. degrees either went into law enforcement, academic sociology, or the health profession. Good luck!!

I am a Soc major with a concentration in cultural studies. I currently work for a non-profit in our Cross Cultural Interpreting Services department.
Whenever I tell people I'm a sociology major they ask if I'm going into Social Work or do I want to teach. I actually want to get a masters in Higher Education/College Student Personnel.

My god I didn't even know there were other sociology majors out there, hehe. I have absolutley no idea what I'm doing with mine...except I am thinking of picking up a minor in child development and thought about getting into family counseling, but I'm not sure if maybe my major should be psych instead???

I have a Bachelors Degree in Sociology. I tried to get my masters degree, but I dropped out of graduate school. After dropping out, I tried to get a job that is related to my college major, no luck! I had a job as a receptionist that lasted two weeks. I did temp and one of my jobs was a long term one. I also went on numerous interviews and registered with a lot of agencies. I didn't get offers and a lot of agencies never contacted me. I have been unemployed since December 2000.
However, I decided to go back to school. I took some undergrad level courses (to boost my grades) and apply to several graduate schools (for sociology). Now I want to study Criminal Justice and Creative Writing.

I'm getting my BA in Sociology in May. But I'm also getting elementary education certification. I plan to teach for about three years, while working on a masters in education, then go full time on my PhD in education...end up teaching elementary education at the university level...
However, if by some odd reason I end up no longer enjoying education at any point during my teaching experiences, I'll look into signing on with a research team looking at childhood socialization and sociology in the classroom...or gender issues...I like those too.

I minored in Sociology.
One of the reasons I chose not to major in it was because I didn't want to go into research. I enjoyed learning about sociology, different cultures, and the social aspects to personality development but, personally, I wouldn't be happy conducting my own research to create theories.
You could always go back to school and get your Masters degree and teach Sociology at a University level.

I'm a soc major, but I'm hoping to go to Medical school, and if not medical school, maybe Optometry school.
I guess my fall back would be to go to graduate school but I don't think it would be in Sociology...maybe something like Leadership Development/theory or something along those lines and end up teaching leadership courses at the University level. I probably could develop a consulting firm out of that as well.

Be like Mike
Michael Jordan majored in sociology at UNC-Chapel Hill. He did, uhm, pretty well for himself. Maybe you could have an amazing basketball career, hock your own line of shoes, and then sell hot dogs and underwear. Hey, it works for him!
--Dr. S
who, majored in English at UNC-Chapel Hill, and worked at a LOT of restaurants while going back to graduate school and teaching part time and not making nearly the income of one fellow alum, MJ.

I think I will eventually go back for my Masters degree. My husband works for GM so we will probably be moving a lot. I don't want to start a program at one college/university and then have to transfer.

oh man, i wouldn't use that as a basis for comparison if i were evaluating what to study...i took soc and crim, and although most of the time i thought sociology was a complete waste of time, i did have my pick of the fillies (some classes were 80-90% female!)...
p.s. i trade stocks so this is completely irrelevant to what i do.
