April Fools

I had plans to meet my little for lunch in the middle of the big student union building on campus, and since I hadn't seen her in a few days, I had a bag of presents with me to give her. When I walked in, she was sitting with one of her pledge sisters, and I gave them hugs and then gave my little her present. She then pushed it aside with her arm and said, "We need to talk." I wasn't sure what was going on, becaue she kept exchanging looks with her pledge sister, and then they asked me about the de-pledging process. We're in the middle of Greek Week right now, and they told me that they were tired of all the sisters being mean to them, and staying up til 4 in the morning working on stuff, and they wanted to quit, and that they had a meeting with the GM pretty soon. I was shocked because I had no idea my little was upset, and was trying really hard to be supportive, but then my voice broke...so I think they realized they went too far and yelled out "APRIL FOOLS!" but I was so surprised and mad that I started to cry in front of everyone, and couldn't stop. I was mad then, but now I'm amused that they got me..especially since my little LOVES Chi Omega.

Does anyone have any good April Fools Day stories??? Hopefully they were less heart breaking than mine!!

Boomer Sooners

I got my 80-year-old Mom pretty good yesterday! I called her in the morning and said, "Hey, are y'all watching the news??? Well, it seems that Oklahoma isn't really a state and that all the people who are from there aren't really U.S. citizens!!"

As a former Okie, she was shocked!

My Favorite Corporate Joke

April Fool's Day, 1996:
The Taco Liberty Bell

On April Fool's Day, 1996 the fast food chain Taco Bell took out a full page ad in the New York Times to announce their purchase of the Liberty Bell. The full text of the ad read as follows:

Taco Bell Buys The Liberty Bell
In an effort to help the national debt, Taco Bell is
pleased to announce that we have agreed to purchase the
Liberty Bell, one of our country's most historic treasures.
It will now be called the "Taco Liberty Bell" and will
still be accessible to the American public for viewing.
While some may find this controversial, we hope our
move will prompt other corporations to take similar action
to do their part to reduce the country's debt.

In a related release, the company explained that people and corporations had been adopting highways for years, and that Taco Bell was simply "going one step further by purchasing one of the country's greatest historic treasures."

Reaction to this announcement was decidedly mixed. Thousands of people called the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the Liberty Bell is housed to angrily protest the decision to sell the bell. However, most people seemed to realize that the advertisement was an April Fool's Day joke. Taco Bell revealed the prank at noon on April 1st in a press release describing their earlier announcement as "The Best Joke of the Day."

The White House even got in on the joke when Mike McCurry, the White House spokesperson, suggested that the federal government would also be "selling the Lincoln Memorial to Ford Motor Co. and renaming it the Lincoln-Mercury Memorial."

The hoax paid off for Taco Bell. Their sales during the week of April 1st spiked upwards by over half a million dollars compared to the week before.

One year, when I was in high school, I played an April Fools joke on my mom and brother. I was generally the first one up in the morning (so I had dibs on the shower). Anyways, I was getting ready and pretended to look out the window. I yelled, "Oh my gosh, there is a DEER in our front lawn". My brother and mom came running over to the window to look, and I blurted out, "APRIL FOOLS".

I didn't want to do anything too mean or cruel...but it was more probable considering where we live.
