every1 and my mama is greek vs. join a what?

im new to this forum 1st off, so maybe a brief intro...

t. dixon. 2nd year at nyu, class of 06. looking to join a sorority.

okay here we go... the greek scene here is only livid if you are in it. i rushed this past fall semester, wasn't feeling it too much (perhaps i wasnt ready at the time). however ive gotten weirdly infatuated with greek life (what bit of it i know about) and i want in. im workin on it.

anyway back to topic. is it better to grow up in that atmosphere (when your parents, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers and/or close friends of families belong to an org and now its your turn) or to go blindly into this (not knowing one org from another, much less anything about it)? i feel like im at a loss, with not knowing about this stuff, and plus going to a school that doesnt really stress greek life.

perhaps im babbling. in any case thats me. hit me back.

Personally, I think it's better to go blindly and learn as you go. Learning the differences for yourself is part of the fun and you don't have to worry about the pressure to join a certain fraternity/sororoity. Having a family full of greeks is fine as well, as long as you remember that the GLO for you might not be the same one that your family wants you to join.

As a northerner, I would really say it doesn't matter. If you were in a very traditional southern school i'd say it would be better if you grew up in it, because it's a bit of a different world at times. The rush process is a lot more pressure, needing to get recs, etc- it would help you be better prepared.

The only person in my family who's greek is a cousin who's a Phi Sigma Sigma. Heck, I didn't even know what sorority she was in until a few months ago. I rushed my sophomore year after learning what greek life was like on my campus. In general i'm the type of person who really likes to think for myself, so I was happy that it was a decision that I made on my own without any family pressures.

I guess it could be helpful to learn a bit more about greeks in general, but greek life varies so much from school to school and has changed over the years that family might not even help much.

Best thing you can do is try to educate yourself about the groups on campus and greek life in general. Greekchat is an awesome site to do that on! This place can probably tell you anything you'd ever need to know about being greek, on any campus, in any group.

Good luck!

Being a New Yorker myself, I would definitely say its not really important if your family was involved in Greek Life. In NYC schools, I find, that people never planned on going Greek until they got to college. Often they didn't know there was greek life at their school till they arrived because they always perceived greek life with the big houses, fraternity row, homecoming and stuff like that, a kind of college culture that really doesn't exist in NYC schools. If someone was groomed all his/her life to join a particular fraternity or sorority he/she would probably not go to school in NYC to begin with.

From what I have heard NYU has a very diverse group of chapters so I am sure you can find your niche. Good luck with recruitment and do keep us updated here on GC!

I kinda went blindly... I think sometimes actually having "everyone and their mama" having been in a sorority you someitmes actually get misinformation because every school is different and everyone will have an indivudial experience even in the same chapter.... so someone else telling you what to expect *may* not be what you get...

Well, a tradition has to start somewhere I say go for it. If Greek Life was so terrible, then why would GC be sooooooooo busy?

Going blindly intot it isn't a bad thing, because it's in NY. A school in NY you don't need to know every little thing beforehand....at least, that is what I got being Greek in NY. I know I can look it up, and I probably will, but what groups are at NYU? Good luck and keep us here at GC updated!

I went in to it blindly. It wasn't until after I joined that I found out that my grandmother is a Sigma Kappa. I grew up with the sterotype of sorority girls in my head and it wasn't until I met one of my closest friends while she was going through Formal recruitment my freshman year that I even got interested. She invited me to hang out with her sisters and then I fell in love with the organization. I rushed the next spring and have loved it ever since. I guess it just depends on what you decide yourself. Don't let anyone make your decisions for you.

I was before I came here. I didn't find that out until after I was initiated. I think it left in like 1993 but I don't know if they are planning on coming back or not. I know the campus is being offered for extension.
